When measuring the gullet width of a saddle, do you measure d-ring to d-ring or nail to nail?

Where do you measure the channel?

Also, does anyone know the width of the Wintec gullets? I'm looking for the width, in inches, of the MW plate.

Thanks!

The gullet is the channel - runs the full length of the saddle.

Measuring d-ring to d-ring or nail to nail only gives you some reference. The d-rings and nails are not always in the same place, so it's all relative. So, if you have 4" vs 4.5", the latter isn't necessarily really wider than the former. But 6" vs 4" is enough to know that the former is wider. That says nothing about the shape though, which is just as important.

What matters more is the interior width. A better reference point would be the width between the tops of the shoulder panels. But, that's all relative too.

The changeable plates are called "gullet" plates, but that's an unfortunate term. It only widens the front, and that's not all there is to needing a wider saddle :)

I don't know the inches of the MW plate (or any of them), but remember, that's *inside* the saddle. How much of the panel is between the plate and the horse differs depending on which saddle you're talking about - Bates vs Collegiate vs Wintec vs whomever else uses the same plates.
