I've never used hoof packing, so bear with me. What are you wrapping it with to keep it in? how long does it need to stay against the sole/frog to be effective? Any tips or hints in general?

Vet wrap to hold it in. If no vet wrap a piece of newspaper works fine.
For a very sore foot I'll change it out a couple times a day.
For regular maintenance, like soreness at a show, keep it in over night.

Ok rule number one: estimate how much you think you will need to pack one hoof. Then put half of it back. Less is way more in this situation. I cut squares out of a feed bag then place about half a golf ball sized blob on it. Smush it into the crevices of the hoof and leave it alone. Any more than half a golf ball and is will smush up the back of the heel and onto the coronet band where it will remain throughout eternity. Or until you use rubbing alcohol and your fingernail to pry it off. I put it on once per day when I do use it.

Magic Cushion contains capsaicin which is an illegal substance for rated/USEF/FEI shows. Not saying it's banned and the Magic Cushion website SAYS "It is a natural product and will not test positive in any equine athletic discipline.", but in theory your horse could possibly test positive for it depending on how much the body absorbs through the foot. Just putting that out there. Anyone know the exact details on this?

They use all sorts of other stuff at shows, too.;) Just sayin'.
There are alternatives to Magic Cushion, but I can't remember which ones are "legal." Forshners, maybe? But a person can do some research and then e-mail the ingredient list to the drug peeps at USEF. M.C. may contain testable ingredients, but they might not be at a high enough level to trigger a positive test. It's best to talk directly to USEF about that.
My tips for hoof packing would be to wear latex or rubber gloves when packing. That stuff gets everywhere. Also, make sure the hoof is completely dry before packing. You'll squish and mash until it's perfect, and then it will pop right out if there is any moisture on the bottom of the foot at all.

D'oh! That would explain why I haven't been able to find it!
I would always put a little vetwrap over the packing, just because one time I had a glob pop out overnight and the horse made sure he touched every body part with it. :eek:Ohhhhhhhh, that stuff does not come out of hair, or mane, or tail...not even with alcohol. He managed to get it on his forehead. IIRC, the horse was grey, too. So even if I was using some stuff you had to pry out in the AM with a crowbar, I would still do a few loops of vetwrap. Because I never want to have that situation happen again.

No I don't wrap. The paper sticks to it and it sticks to the hoof pretty well. You will find it on the elbows occasionally. Remove that with rubbing alcohol.

Ever do this while they're turned out or just in the stall?

Good question. I suppose it might depend on the moisture?
Thanks for the USEF warning, but this particular animal is so far from showing at anything rated/recognized right now that it isn't really a concern--just looking to provide some foot relief--so if there is something that is even better, but not ok with USEF, feel free to list that as well.

No I don't do it outside of the stall.

Piece of feed bag is a brilliant idea. I had always used poultice paper and vetwrap

No, no, save your money. Just cut/tear hoof size pieces out of your horse's feed bag. Then make a "boot" out of duct tape: 3/4 pieces(6"or so) side by side, then 3/4 pieces(6"or so) perpendicular...like a big "X" or cross. Put that on the bottom of the foot with one more piece of duct tape around the hoof to secure and voila! Instant hoof packing with boot, it will stay in overnite and I just let it fall off when I work the horse the next day.:cool:

So you aren't just using the paper to actually push it into the hoof, you are leaving the paper on the foot after you get it all pushed in, correct?

I use it as well. With paper like Laurie said. I also use traileze poultice, bay mud, icthamol, animalintex, paint them with dmso, formaldehyde, foot freeze.. depends on the foot. All Packing other than the animalintex gets done just as mentioned. With paper.

I apply the MC w/rubber gloves in the stall and the pressure from the shavings holds it in great. I do this when I an going out of town just for comfort abd in 3-4 days when I pick hooves, it is still there in the deep cracks.

My jug of MC Xtreme has a big sticker on it that says "Capsaicin Free Since 200X" can't remember what year off hand but want to say its 2004 or 2006

This is an old old thread. Forshners Hoof Packing was off the market just long enough for people to get desperate enough to pay the HUGE price increase. Brilliant business move.
