My friend found out from the rescue that the horse has summer grass allergies, and he sneezes and shakes his head alot while on grass, but is perfectly fine on hay. He is also digging occasionally in the field in the dirt, but doesn't roll. Looks like he is licking the dirt? He was checked for colic, and is fine.
Anyone else experience this and what did you do about it?
Thanks!

It may be the normal bugs and things on the pasture rather than the grass itself. Not any experience with grass allergies, but my horse has alot of other allergies and does well on benedryl. It is a forbidden substance in the ring, so if we show during her allergy season, I take her off it and give her dex (and claim it). But I try not to show during her bad season.

My draftx is allergic to the grass :(
and about 26 other things, too.
Not a whole lot we can do about it, I have grass everywhere. He gets allergy shots, and when he goes out he wears fly boots and at night, a fly sheet. When the grass bothers him (but he seems more acclimated now), he would react by getting crusty sores on his legs, about the size of a nickle. Most healed within a few days...unfortunately, one didn't heal and turned into a habronema. We have been dealing with it for over 2 years now. You can read about it on our website under Tucker's blog: www.calypsofarmeventers.com
He was really good and managed until about a month ago, literally overnight he went from looking the best in years to "OH MY GOD WHAT HAPPENED?"
I need to post new pictures, he rubbed open the habronema and is just eaten up. Thankfully he can now wear his fly sheet at night without getting hot. Turning out during the day and keeping him in at night isn't an option, it is too hot and we have wicked lightning storms.

If he has a reaction to grass but not hay, then you keep him off grass and feed him hay. In the winter you can turn them out after the first freeze. I did this for the 5 years I owned my first pony. It's not that hard.:)
