View Full Version : Caprimond -- what does he bring?

I've searched this forum, but would like to hear from other breeders about what they think of this stallion in terms of what he (fairly) consistantly brings to the breeding equation.
Is he a good broodmare sire as well?
I see his frozen is offered by several brokers -- is it any good?
I seem to remember hearing it's not and that Hohenstein didn't freeze that well either (I know I tried him once w/ no luck). So who are the horses with Caprimond/Karon up close that you like?

I think Caprimond is most noted for giving type, elegance, and rideability. From what I recall, his frozen is not good, nor is that of his son Hohenstein. If you want to use a stallion in N.A. with Caprimond blood, look to Contucci, Dacaprio, or DeLaurentis. There is also Rosenthal, who does not carry Caprimond blood, but has Karon blood.

I have a Caprimond Daughter that is 3 yr old. If you email me, I can tell you more about her and what the dam brought to the breeding. You can see Cher on our website under sales.
Her 1/2 sister out of the same dam and 3 half siblings by DOnPrincipe are on the same page. You can take a look at them and see the differences between what the stallions put into each offspring

I asked about Caprimond on the Trakehner web site and got no response. Disappointing. He has been used with Hanoverians more than Trakehners so maybe not surprising.
I have a Caprimond grandson. Sire is Contucci and the resemblance to both is striking.
Same poll, neck and face.
Almost like it was stamped out by a machine.

I think if you are looking specifically for type and elegance in breeding to Caprimond, then its good to LOOK at Contucci, Dacaprio, and DeLaurentis because they are wonderful examples of what Caprimond brings to the mix in warmblood lines that are not known for type and elegance. One should also note what these lines are known for, including a good engine, to evaluate the cross. However, I would not agree that these stallions can substitute in place of Caprimond because they have dams or sires whose converse genetics have the potential to dominate in a cross. Rosenthal may potentially be a good candidate for a mare where Caprimond would be ideal because the Rubinsteins tend to have type and elegance themselves.
I've never heard of a Caprimond foal by frozen semen.
I'd like to suggest you look at my stallion Schiffon, fully approved by the German Trakehner Verband (and an FN dressage breeding index of 120 despite being owned by a small breeder who bred him only to Trakehners and did not have a mega-marketing program), the ATA, and ISR/Old NA. And here in the US with fresh semen. Wins and placings through I-1. All of his foals are typey and elegant, with supple, elastic movement and rideability. With a TB damsire who was an international dressage horse, Schiffon is also a reliable refiner. More info at ww.glamorganmanor.com.

"I've never heard of a Caprimond foal by frozen semen"
Timotheus was conceived by frozen semen. The Holecamps had a couple of foals as well from frozen. These are just off the top of my head, but I do know there are others out there as well, both pure Traks, and also Hanovarian foals.

There are few sires that are more reliable to add type (and when I say type I mean not just 'prettier than mama' but the truely adorable type that people will watch and start raving about right away) ;)
You can also expect very high rideability and particular talent for collected work. Not always the big trot extension but those will come with training and the canter tends to be very good too.
You want to watch size (may be on the smaller side so a dam with established size in her lines is a must), feet (may end up narrower than desirable) and walk (may be on the short-strided side of the spectrum but rythm generally comes out good)
I would also not cross him to anything that is less than tough as the Karon-get have a little bit of a rep. here for being softies in the orthopedic department. That being said I have used Hohenstein in my programme and retained the resulting filly she is now 13 yrs. has never taken a lame step and x-rayed fine in her screening. But then she hasn't been ridden after age 4 and produced foals since. Plus she's got Perser xx following directly on her damside which is reknown for toughness just like his full brother Pik As xx and behind that is a dam who has worked hard in harness for years before becoming a broodmare.
You can check out Caprimond's breed value scores in the Hanoverian stallion yearbook. Very conclusive and a ton of data available since he already has many many offspring on the ground. I can't tell you about the frozen.

There is a Caprimond gelding down here where I am (and he was a frozen baby) out of a t'bred mare. He is LOVELY. Just one of those horses that between the type and the movement will literally steal your breath. But he is HOT and very senstitive. That being said even his owner fully acknowledges that the temeperment comes from the dam and not the sire. She is doing mid to upper levels with him... I want to say around 3rd, might be moving into 4th level now with him. He is also a pussy cat on the ground - very cuddly, but under saddle very sensitive and tacks a tactful ride. He is around 16 hh.

From Kareen, "I would also not cross him to anything that is less than tough as the Karon-get have a little bit of a rep. here for being softies in the orthopedic department."
Kareee, can you comment on lines that you think do add toughness? Thanks!

Take a look at Donarweiss (http://hilltopfarminc.com/stallion_donarweiss_ggf.html#2) if you want Hohenstein and Caprimond. Pretty, pretty, pretty babies!!!

I have a DeLaurentis GOV premium filly.
Looking ahead, would it be okay to double up on a D stallion with Caprimond in the pedigree?
Like Donarweiss?
