View Full Version : Anyone use Thorough-Bread feed?

I looked at a boarding/retirement situation for my gelding today, and they only feed Thorough-Bread pellets, which the BO said was alfalfa and grain. This horse gets hot on concentrated feed, so I am just wondering if anyone feeds this and if it makes their horses hot. It sounds to me like a feed geared towards horses on the track, and Google is *not* helping me. Does anyone have any experience with this feed?

Ingredients 2-4 are corn, molasses and wheat bran.

Seems super low in fat (2%)! and the second ingredient is corn, third is cane molasses...Not the kind of thing I would want to feed my guys, but everybody has different things they look for in feed.

Good sleuthing, stryder!

I suspect that a little goes a long way, and keeps the feed bills low, and that's why it is fed. Thanks!!!

Not a great sleuth, but " " marks are your friend in google searches. ;)
Seems like it's a complete feed. It's cheap to haul (well, cheaper than hay), zero waste, stores well. One associated company, Pinal Feeding Co., is in my home county. Red River, BTW, used to be partially owned by John Wayne.

Doesn't seem like a little goes a long way. If you have to feed minimum 12 lbs/day to meet vitamin and mineral requirements, that's a whole lot of feed!

Have you checked into using a ration balancer? My guy eats 1 lb/day - a bag lasts 50 days and costs me $24.99. You could always add additional feed if he/she is a hard keeper.
