View Full Version : 2 TB stallions in Western MA - UPATED:Now located in IL! HOMES FOUND!! See post 59!

I think this is a long shot, but I figured I'd try - There are 2 older TB stallions at a barn in Western MA that are going to be sent to auction or euthanized on Tuesday if homes are not found for them. The rescues my friend has contacted so far are unable to accommodate stallions. Does anyone have any ideas about who might be able to take them? They deserve a better fate than this.
TIA.
UPDATE - see post 42!

Could the owner geld them, and (long shot given how packed rescues are) could the rescues then take them?

The owner has absolutely no interest in doing anything to save these horses.
We need to find at least temporary homes to even get them gelded at this point.

Exact location? Or an "exacter" location? Are they up to date on everything? What's "older"? Are they sound? Must they go together? If the owner has a confirmed taker, will they hold longer than Tuesday? Are they free?
And is the auction going to be Crowleys?
Honestly, euthanizing them would not be the worst thing in the world....in fact, I'd give the owner kudos for being a responsible owner and doing the right thing for their older boys. Auction, however, is a different matter.

They're in Hadley. The barn is closing and being sold, and all the horses are to be out by 8/15. I believe that they are up to date on everything, but I'm not positive. Not sure of their soundness - neither of them have been ridden in years, so I really think the only option for them would be pasture ornaments somewhere. I'm not directly involved in the situation so I don't know all the details, (and I realize that I could be stepping into a hornet's nest by posting this) I just know that they are running out of time.
I agree, euthanizing them is a humane option, and I do hope that if it comes to that, she chooses that over sending them to the auction. Does Crowley's take stallions? Then it might be there - I'm trying to find that out now.

Crowleys takes anything. Anything can be sold at a horse auction and there ARE SLAUGHTER BUYERS THERE.

I know this sounds crazy, but what is their breeding? I ask because someone I knew years ago bought a stallion (Tb breeding) started breeding him to her mares and now runs a huge breeding operation of high quality. Would anyone take a chance on them if they were decent bloodlines?
pucky
Aug. 7, 2009, 09:06 PM
I will try to find out their breeding. One is in his teens, and the other in his early twenties, I believe.
I was afraid of that about Crowleys. I know one auctioneer had turned them down because they were stallions, but it wasn't Crowleys, so that could well be where they are headed. I don't know if they would be free to any takers, but I bet they'd be darn cheap if they weren't, as the owner just wants them gone at this point. I know they've been offered to some local people if anyone's willing to take them, understandably, most people just aren't equipped or willing to take on a stallion pasture pet.
Until recently, I boarded at the barn where they are at, which is how I know of the situation, and I'm just trying to do what I can to help them out.
Thanks.

WOW! I haven't seen Tom Fool that close up in AGES.. Bebopper produced leading sire Hatchet Man and Stop the Music who died a few years ago at 33. He was famous as the horse that was "given" the win in the 1972 Champagne, when Secretariat was DQ'd.
I cannot offer a home bit can make a small donation to help. I hope this stallion has been covering sport mares!

And the other stallion set a new track record. Not at a big track. Still, a track record's nothing to sneeze at . . .
I'll assume Old Friends can't take them . . . or, do you know if anyone asked?
You also might cross-post on the Horses In Need (if you haven't already) at pedigreequery.com
Or, some of the other forums, like Alex Brown's.
Best of luck find them a soft place to land.

Thanks for all your ideas!
AC4H has been contacted, I just contacted Canter NE, and we're working on a few other places as well. Hopefully we can figure something out for the boys.
And just to clarify, since this thread was moved to the Giveaways forum, these horses are not mine to give away. I'm just trying to do what ever I can to get them to new homes. Please feel free to PM me with any specific questions or for contact info.
Thanks!!

I posted the older one on the Breeding Forum and there are some folks over there who would contribute to gelding and/or transportation to get him to a safe harbor.
If you go there, you can see who they are.

That Tom Fool stud is on another thread. So maybe combine? And a recent fulgy thread had testimonials that it is never too late to geld. Can you imagine Tom Fool being that close, a grandsire? The dam must have been very old when she foaled this boy.
I'm up for a donation for gelding or transportation.

The older gelding was bred by Mrs. John Hay Whitney (the Mr. has quite a write up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hay_Whitney ). If they were related to Marylou Whitney, maybe someone could contact her? I think she's big into keeping "her" horses from being slaughtered?

Call Old Friends in Georgetown, KY and see if they have any suggestions. They take retired stallions from Lexington farms, though they could be selective, not sure, but maybe they have some ideas for you on other places these horses could go...

It's just a couple of us former boarders from the barn where they are located trying to help them find homes, no official non-profit involved, so at this point there's nowhere to send any donations. Hopefully, I will have an update tomorrow afternoon about their status, and I'll keep you all posted!

My father said he would be happy to take in the older stallion! The catch is finding a way to get him here. He is located in NC. If your friend is still needing to find a home for him, I think between my father and the cothers we could find him some rides out this way.

If they have to be gone by Tuesday, wouldn't a foster pasture/barn be needed for a couple of days? How would that be handled to keep them safe?
Joie
Aug. 9, 2009, 10:29 AM
Exactly, vineyridge...that's a major issue, I think.
My father said he would be happy to take in the older stallion! The catch is finding a way to get him here. He is located in NC. If your friend is still needing to find a home for him, I think between my father and the cothers we could find him some rides out this way.
I would be willing also possibly be willing to take one. There are a couple of variables working against the boys, though, so let me elaborate.
I just spoke with the barn manager, and the she said the owner is willing to give these guys away with papers, and they are current on all vaccinations, farrier, deworming, etc. Broadway Jester is on all day turnout in a private paddock, and apparently still quite spunky! Both are sound, healthy and "have never even had a snotty nose". The current owner has owned Boradway Jester since he was a yearling. The farm is closing it's doors, and all horses need to be moved before the 15th. From what I gather, Broadway Jester is in all day turnout, and is respectful of fencing, etc. though he still KNOWS he is a stallion and will act like one. ;) Concorde's Future is a bit more mild mannered, even though he is "younger". Whatever the case, they have both been in a boarding situation for years, so we know they are easy to handle, as long as someone remembers they are stallions.
HOWEVER, neither horse has a current coggins, and they apparently there is someone scheduled to pick them up for the sale on Tuesday. I could also possibly offer a home for one of them, but I am not aware of any hauler who will haul without a current coggins in hand, unless the horse is going directly to a sale.
Whatever the situation, and whereever the horses end up permanantly, I am thinking the horses *may* need somewhere to stay for a day or two until the coggins is back, and final transport arrangements can be made. Even if I cannot take one, I would be willing to pitch in, as well, for hauling. I cannot afford to haul one home presently, as I just purchased an older stallion and all of my resources are going into him right now, and he needs to come first.

Aug. 9, 2009, 10:39 AM
If the horses actually have until the 15th to be out, couldn't the Coggins be done by then? I guess there would need to be a solid commitment to move them out on the 15th. I know my vet will fax copies within a day or two if necessary. Is there another barn in that area that could take them for a short layover until transport can be arranged? I would chip in a dribble. I hate to see these older stallions just dumped when they're old. I was so happy to see that the poor old guy on AC4H broker page got rescue.

OP, I'm sending you a PM, too. I'd be willing to transport these guys to a good home for free (within 250 miles of Hadley) if good home(s) are found.
I have seen the one stallion (I think he's the younger one) and he's lovely...he's actually a small guy (not sure of his height but he cannot be more than 15.2 I don't think), and his face looks like a welsh pony. We thought he'd be adorable bred to small pony mares. He's very sweet, too. I'm not familiar with the older guy - I believe they were using him as a teaser stallion.

So... I think we may have found homes for the boys!! Greenpastures, is your dad a definite for taking Jester? Joie has offered to take Concorde if we don't find a closer home for him.
All we need now is shipping... Does anyone have any ideas of cost, shippers who might be available? I've never shipped commercially, so I don't know where to start there. Ty2003, it sounds like they'll be going further than 250 miles, but maybe you could help out shipping to a pickup destination if necessary?

It's early and I'm not awake yet :) So where are these guys going? Is it North Carolina? Where in NC? I MAY be able to take them if we can get some folks to pitch in for gas since it's a lot further than 250 miles :) (and if I can convince hubby to let me drive his precious truck ALL the way there lol). I would think it'd end up being cheaper than a commercial shipper either way. Just let me know!

Umm, if the other one ends up needing to come to me, I am in Southern Pines. That being said there are no major interstates comming through here. Where is the other horse going? Unless it is going to the far reaches of the mountains chances are I could either meet at that horses new home, off the interstate somewhere, and if need be could meet and drop the other horse off too, depending on where it needed to go.

UPDATE -
The owner has agreed to hand over the stallions, and the barn manager told me that the owner has agreed to pay to have them shipped to IN!!! And I think we've got 2 definite homes in IN. The catch is that I need to move them tonight, and I need to let her know asap that we're taking them. I've got calls out to confirm that the temporary home is available tonight, but just in case, can anyone house them tonight until shipping is arranged? I have a 2 horse trailer, so I can move them locally, or if they need to travel a bit, we can move at least one if not both (I don't think trailering them together in a 2 horse is a wise idea?) Can anyone provide any help on really short notice??

Latest update:
Joie has agreed to take Concorde (yeah!!), and we have a possible home for Jester in IN, but I'm still waiting on confirmation. Joie spoke with the owner today, and she will not allow Jester to go to FL or anywhere in the south because she thinks it's too hot. The owner also wants to make sure that Jester goes to someone with stallion experience, as he can be a bit spunky. (That being said, I've handled him and he's quite well behaved, and the woman who has them temporarily now said they've both been perfect gentlemen. His biggest issue is that he will sometimes run/jump in and out of his stall or through the turnout gate when you are leading him).
We can get them shipped together to the midwest as soon as tomorrow, but it looks like we might need some backup offers on Jester in the midwest, just in case. Please feel free to pm me or Joie for more information.
Thank you!!
ETA: Anywhere in the Northeast would also work for Jester!

Thanks pucky!
And I can take BOTH boys short term and see how it works out. Worst case scenario is they both ship here this week, and we go from there. I am just leery of taking in two more boys long-term, as I recently purchased an older TB stallion, and he is dealing with a bit of laminitis presently and I am sort of micromanaging him. He and my "regular" herd are my priority right now, of course, but I can manage for the short term.
I do go back to work on Monday (gak. I so love being a teacher and having summers free!), AND I am pregnant with my 4th child and due in late October, so I would like to be sure that we find a placement before then.
I will definately post pictures and we will keep everyone updated on the boys, though, and it really is nice to see so many willing helpers step forward!

They're settling in well, and I think with a little spit and polish they will be looking really great! Jester is a big chunky, and may have Cushing's, or it may just be a bit of stress and need of a good grooming. Concorde could use a few pounds.
BOTH are easy to handle, respectful of the fencing, and all-around good old boys. I can keep them here for as long as need be, but ideally new homes before late October would be great. Pass the word...they really are great, deserving old guys.

Well....both guys are heading to a home just 120 miles from me!! They decided after some deliberation to not only take Concorde, but also to take Jester! They are going to work with their vet to get both guys collected and evaluated for fertility, and they'll go from there!
It's actually a very neat story from start to finish: I contacted several TB farms in IL when I knew the guys would be headed this way, and these folks had expressed an interest. Ironically, enough, the hauler who brought the boys here picked up a pony at their place right before he dropped the boys off here. They said they realized the stallions were THE stallions when he told them he had two stallions from the east coast on the trailer, and they got to pat them and visit with them before they even arrived here.
They knew they wanted Concorde right away, but were concerned about Jester, because he was a sweaty mess during the trailer ride and for the first day here, but he's settled in REALLY well. We talked last night, and they spoke with their vet, and they may pick them up as early as this afternoon!
I am actually already having a hard time, as I am totally smitten with Jester already, and I really want to keep him, but I can't do him the justice that they can. I like Concorde a lot as well, since he's SO adorable and sweet, but there really IS something about Jester that just makes you adore him and respect him...he's an amazing old guy, and I know they both have lots of life and vigor left in them. This whole thing makes me very happy!
I'll post updates once they are settled in their new home, and if anyone is interested in finding out how the fertility testing goes, drop me a line, and I'll pass along contact info. :)

Just another update!!!
I spoke with the boys new owner, and she said they are doing GREAT!! She said Jester is quite a character...very full of himself, slick and shiny and muscular. Did I mention VERY full of himself??!! She said they joke that he is 2.4 years old, not 24 years old. In fact, they have had people ask when he was heading to the track as he gallops around his paddock! LOL!!
Concorde is well also. He had a bad bout of abcesses because he paces so much if he is turned out, even in a small area, so he's got new shoes, and they are working on an excercise program for him (which involves lunging and RETRAINING, too! YAY!) Just so his brain and body are active because he seems to very much prefer his stall to turnout. (The BM told me this, and she was spot on with her descriptions of both boys).
Anyway, just thought you would all enjoy an update. They decided against fertility testing this Fall so they could give both guys a chance to get settled and fit, and they will keep me posted and I'll keep all of you posted come spring! I look forward to happy updates, and I am also hoping to go see the boys sometime over winter break, so I can update with pictures, too.
Again, this has really been a miracle for these old guys, and everyone involved should feel proud and happy. I love that everyone pulled together so fast to make this possible!

Yay! I am so excited that Concord and Jester both found great homes. I used to board my guy at the barn where the two boys lived and they were both quite the characters. so awesome to hear that to old guys got another lease on life!

They are going to be standing stud this year!! Fingers crossed for them that they get a few more foals on the ground before they are through.

The boys have both confirmed several mares in foal already this season. Unfortunately, Concorde is not the type of horse that can handle turnout, and so he is currently being stalled nearly all the time. The current home feels he would be happier at a quieter farm.
Jester is also available, if anyone is interested. If not, I am going to take him, and retire him here if need be. I fell in love with him last year when they were here, and since I had to euthanize my stallion Whitesville earlier this year due to complications of laminitis, Jester has a place here. I think it would be unfortunate to have him NOT breeding, though, as he is still fertile and has amazing bloodlines. He cannot handle a heavy breeding load, as he is old and has a harder time mounting the mares than the young guys do. If he comes here I will try and see how collecting and inseminating goes, but what a shame to lose those bloodlines for the thoroughbred breeders...
Anyone who might be interested please contact me for contact info.
