If you wanted to change ownership of a horse to another family member strictly for legal purposes, would you just need a bill of sale between those two family members?

None of them are registered horses. Could the bill of sale be for $1?

Yes to the above in a normal situation...BUT. If there are other legal issues surrounding the situation--such as divorce or other lawsuit--consult an attorney.

Also if you're in a state with brand inspections get that transferred as that is considered the primary proof of ownership.

Do you have any legal documents showing that you own the horse to begin with? If not, just say it's not yours and it's your family member's.

judges have 20/20 hind sight and will likely undo fraudulent conveyance
on the other hand things that eat are not really assets unless it is big bucks.
doing the transfer to be sure they are well cared for may pass muster.
