How to feed alfalfa hay????

Buying alfalfa hay to mix in with my old horses hay. What is an appropriate amount to mix in with his hay to help him get some weight on without hurting his belly? I don't wana give too much...1 fleck alfalfa per 3 or 4 of orchard grass hay????

I feed straight alphalfa. Never had a problem.

That's probably a good start to introduce the alfalfa to him...then gradually increase until it's half and half or until he reaches the weight you want him at.

Introducing rich alfalfa too quickly can result in upset tummies and soupy, loose poo because it can upset the "good bug" balance in his gut. Slowly is good.
