It appears that the cold weather and lack of vegitation has affected the growth and size of Sibera's horses. That or someone needs a better breeding program and some nicer hay.

Think how much grief Obama got - before becoming president - about playing basketball shirtless in Hawaii.
That said, I'd rather see either of them shirtless than what I saw at the gas station earlier. (Some men N-E-E-D to wear belts!!! 'Nuff said!) Now, off to bleach my eyeballs...

My original thought was that he looked not bad, as a rider. But then I remembered a friend of mine in the FSU who was a big time TV star. He got me involved in the barn I was at for a long time but it was a social thing and he was scared $$itless of horses. Along came some magazine that wanted to do pics of him doing his "hobby" and they came up with riding. So friend was mounted (probably with a good bit of liquid courage involved), positioned and probably held together with duct tape to make him look right.

He's sagging big time. Middle aged moobs. But knowing how so many men look in that part of the world, not bad -- even though I'm the 180 degree opposite of a putim-back-in-your-shirt supporter.
If the Russkie security goons are combing the net for comments, they are sure to think that all of ours are directed centrally from the White House. What a lame bunch. But it's for domestic consumption.

I always loved to see pictures of Reagan riding :)
When this thread first started I thought back to Reagan's riding and I just had to wonder at how these guys can/could feel comfortable riding without helmets. I know Reagan fancied himself a sort of refined cowboy, and I'm sure Putin is a macho guy, but how can they justify not taking such a simple safety precaution as wearing a helmet?

There is a good closeup of the horse's head and bridle in the little slide show here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8185524.stm
It's really a nice-looking horse. I believe Putin does in fact know how to ride; he was an officer in the army and I think the Russians do a lot of riding in the military. I have no comment on his politics or governing skills.
I know Reagan fancied himself a sort of refined cowboy
Reagan actually rode in jods and a cc saddle more than he did in western gear. It was when he ran for governor that he westernized his image on the advice of his campaign people. They thought the jods and tall boots made him look elitist. He also rode and loved Arabians, and everyone knows no respectable cowboy would be caught dead on one of them damned Ay-rabs. ;)
But he was a horseman and he loved to ride.

About Reagan and helmets -- I think that photo of Reagan jumping was taken back when he was governor, and folks just didn't think so much about helmets and safety then. The jump is obviously not very big. Probably it was a photo op for the Governor, obviously not a PSA for helmet safety.
I still love Ronald Reagan. Wish someone like him would come along...
Sigh.
Putin holds up pretty well for a 50-something, but I can't get over the fact that he's a stone cold killer. It's OK for him to ride without a helmet, IMO.

Putin looks like he knows what he's doing, but I don't get why he's not wearing a shirt while riding. He could have gotten some serious road rash if that horse bolted out from under him.

Anyhoo, to keep this somewhat horse related, although Putin may be kinda creepy, and the photos look rather contrived and as though he's trying to pose solo for some sappy romance novel, he looks pretty darned good for his age. The last guy I dated is 3 years younger than him and doesn't look nearly as good with his shirt off. Heck, I have no desire to visit Siberia, really, but I'd go if it meant I could ride a cute pony like that...

Reagan used to ride in jodphur breeches and a Hermes english saddle, but was told he should look more "masculine." So Hermes made him a saddle that looked more western, I've read from some websites where similar Hermes saddles were for sale. (No personal knowledge here, just what I've read on websites.)
Oh wait, I skipped some pages. Has this evolved, devolved, into a political fight? Let me interject my favorites, the Clintons, who when they went to Martha' Vineyard while in the White House rode those nice elderly trail horses.

George Bush the Texan is 'scared of horses'
By Alex Spillius in Washington
Published: 12:01AM BST 21 Sep 2007
President Bush may like to be seen as a swaggering tough guy with a penchant for manly outdoor pursuits, but in a new book one of his closest allies has said he is afraid of horses.
Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico, derided his political friend as a "windshield cowboy" – a cowboy who prefers to drive – and "the cockiest guy I have ever met in my life".
He recalled a meeting in Mexico shortly after both men had been elected when Mr Fox offered Mr Bush a ride on a "big palomino" horse.
Mr Fox, who left office in December, recalled Mr Bush "backing away" from the animal.
''A horse lover can always tell when others don't share our passion," he said, according to the Washington Post.
Mr Bush has spoken of his fondness for shooting doves and cutting brush on his Crawford ranch in Texas, which he bought in 1999.
The property reportedly has no horses and only five cattle.
Mr Fox is the latest old friend to turn on Mr Bush as the US president faces a lonely final 18 months in office, derided for failures in Iraq and at home.
Donald Rumsfeld, his defence secretary until last November, asked recently if he missed the president, said flatly: "No."
Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, has attacked the Bush administration's economic policy at length in a new autobiography, accusing the Republican president of poor fiscal discipline and betraying the party's basic principles of low spending.
Asked for his reaction to criticism from former aides, the president replied: "My feelings are not hurt."

Not that I recall. A few horse's backsides, certainly. There is a humerous history book by Will Ferguson called "Bastards and Boneheads" wherein he reviews the careers of every Prime Minister and makes a case for them being either a bastard or a bonehead. Some of the stuff those early PM's
got away with in the pre-media age was pretty amazing.
Not a politician, but the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, Chief Justice Brian Dickson, was a rider. I read somewhere that he kept a horse at a stable near Ottawa and rode every morning before court. He was an amputee as well. (Leg. War related I think but I might be wrong on that).

Did that blogcdn site trip anyone else's security software? My Internet Security is set pretty high.
No, but it did raise my hackles as being blatantly racist.
Not funny. :no::no::no:

The picture itself is not racist...but several "comments" regarding it are.

MILOUTE55, I challenged you directly after you posted the link to the monkey riding a horse, with the question, "Who can name this president?"
I said, I give. Who is it? You read my reply, I'm sure, but didn't respond.
So I'm asking you again. What exactly was your intention in posting that? Which president is it supposed to represent?

i'm glad to see you're the only one laughing at your racist jokes...
 I'm laughing at you calling me a racist... I'm sure my black brother in law (yes, black... he refuses to be called African American... maybe he's racist), Vietnamese aunt, and Bolivian father in law would be laughing at you too ... but then again... they are not as hypersensitive as you seem to be .

nobody in particular... it was just a joke to "lighten up" the atmosphere after everybody got told by the mods to stop discussing politics.... in fact I did type "president riding horse" in google and for some reason this picture came up.... I guess the monkey's name is "President" or something.
I just thought it was a funny picture and it could make people smile to find a monkey on a picture while they were expecting a president... nothing more. It really was, and still is, no big deal!

I thought it was funny.
But I think anything that has a monkey in it is funny.

I think any MAN on a horse is nice, seems mostly I see women riding. For his age, he looks darned good, you oughta come to GA..butt cracks and beer guts..ugh...
I see a man doing manly things in a manly way..quite refreshing from the froo froo Metros and EMOs I see. Of course I am older and perhaps appreciate a manly man more. They are getting scarce for us widows who are 50. I did think he had a good seat and hands..I imagine he is shorter than I am though and already taken like so many manly men out there.
You just have to be in my boots..a man that age riding a horse! Whoopee! Sure he is aging, but let me tell you young chickies something, you too will age, and one day you will wake up and say "where did it all go?" Pay attention now: This is important - LOOK DOWN!

As one approaching her five-uh-oh birthday next week, I won't be dating myself by saying this entire post reminded me of those Irish Spring commercials.
But sidepasser, don't limit yourself to men your age. Mr DZ is a bit younger than me, as manly man as they get, horsie but not a rider and an excellent cook (and other things), too. They are out there.
I just don't get the look down part. At what? My boobs?

Jesus Christ, children. It's like fricking monkeys with goddamned typewriters on this message board sometimes. Every few months, someone makes another thread inappropriately political.
You all exhaust me entirely.

As much as we may disagree on this discussion, at least we are discussing!

So. Imagine my amusement when bare-chested Putin and his (neighing!) horse made a guest appearance on The Soup (E!) tonight.:lol::lol: It's during the first minute or so while Joel is discussing Paula's departure from American Idol. There are also other horses and mentions of horses throughout the show.

Reagan actually rode in jods and a cc saddle
Uh, no, he rode in breeches and forward seat saddles. Close contact saddles weren't even invented.

We understand that it can be difficult to separate our political opinions from our comments, particularly when political figures are the topic, but this is a horse board, so we're not going to devote resources to moderating non-horse-related topics/issues.
Everyone's had ample opportunity to "admire" Putin, et al, so we've extracted a few posts and are closing the thread.
Also, a reminder that foul language--or acronyms abbreviating it--aren't allowed in the forums.
Thanks!
