View Full Version : Locking saddles

A friend of mine boards her horse and recently had her saddle stolen- (or borrowed without permission. Yet another reason I am so grateful to have my own little place at home!) Luckily it was an older second-hand saddle she was getting ready to sell as soon as her new Pessoa came in, but it made me realize just how vulnerable the tack is at a boarding stable.

How would someone go about securing their saddle to prevent theft?

Their tack room is fairly small so there is no room for locking tack trunks or lockers. Everyone has their saddles on racks stacked up on the wall with hooks right next to the rack for bridles and girths.

I've seen western saddles locked to their wall racks by a bike chain placed through the hole right behind the pommel, but english style saddles don't have that hole.

Hey, if it was one of those saddle racks that are coated metal-made out of pipe or something-I think the bike chain would still work. You'd just have to make it a fig 8 wound through the open spots. If that makes sense? I had the same problem-my saddle was borrowed several times w/out permission. I finally just took to carrying my tack around with me in the car until I get my own place set up-I'll be asking for barn advice in another thread;-). Tell her good luck! Also just write an appeal for return of the saddle-it may return as it went.

I just cannot find it at a US retailer. I am sure if she bought it herself the barn owner would help her install it if she provided her own padlock to it.

if it's just people borrowing it you can run a thin chain through the D-rings and stirrups and padlock it to the rack.

I either store my saddle at home or lock it in my trailer dressing room. I don't feel safe leaving it out in the tack room unsecured.
