A fellow KWPN breeder from Holland came to visit our farm yesterday, and we started talking bloodlines, breeding, mares etc... She bred both her mares in Holland to Uphill this year, and had fantastic remarks about him. He apparently lives just down the road from her, and she has been able to meet him and watch him in competition. I'm thinking about possibly getting her to send me some frozen for him, but wondered what others thought?

I also really like their other stallion Winningmood.

I vaguely remember hearing something about Van Norel not being willing to sell frozen semen to North America. I think I read this on Scot Tolman's blog. Might want to ask him.

She gave me the impression I could get it, but perhaps I'm mistaken.

Hi Amoroso,
I am by no means an expert in this area, so please don't just go on what I am saying, verify it for yourself.
I don't think it's a matter of just buying the doses and sending it over. There is quite a bit of paperwork and special testing/quarantining of the stallion that the Canadian government requires before frozen semen is allowed into the country, to ensure that it is free of disease. If the doses that your friend is planning on sending you were not frozen with the purpose of sending them to North America in mind, they probably won't fulfill the criteria of the Canadian government for import. Perhaps you should ask a Canadian semen broker about what is involved in importing frozen from Europe? I wish you luck. He looks like a phenomenal stallion!
Take care,
Sara

I believe Uphill will be available via frozen in 2010 in NA. His semen is supposed to be super.

What do others think of Uphill, regardless of semen coming here or not....?

I think that it will be a real treat for our North American Breeders to have access to Uphill in our breeding program. I have seen him personally and am very impressed with him, both in his movement and especially in his character and ridability. His blood lines are so refreshing. It seems that the dressage stallions that are available to us are either Jazz, Krack C, Ferro or a combination of the three. Uphill offers us a completely new approach. Many years ago the Van Norels attempted to send frozen semen from their stallion Vincent to the US. In those days the freezing process was not as well understood and things could have gone better. It is difficult to find the time and opportunity to campaign a young stallion as well as put him through the quarentine period that is required for international shipment. I have heard that he may be collected and frozen at VDL Stud. If this is truly the case, it should be fairly easy to get his semen for our mares. Keep your fingers crossed!

One more thing for our Canadian friends--The Van Norels are the breeders of Ashligh Holzer's Pop Art as well as several other of her horses over the years.

If I had the money, I'd go to the Van Norels to buy a horse. I have a Keur Sport mare by their (now deceased) stallion Cabochon who competed to PSG before she was retired from competition due to an injury. I have spoken with Andre Van Norel at DAD and he is one of the nicest horsepeople I've met. I've seen pictures of both Oscar and Uphill and would love to have one of their offspring. Sadly, my mare cannot carry another foal (she has had 2, one by Amsterdam and one by Sir Sinclair) or I would definately be looking at either one of their stallions if available here. Super people and horsemen. If Uphill semen becomes available in the US/Canada it would be a great thing for us. He is the product of many generations of the Van Norel's successful breeding program.

A lady I know has a mare carrying an Uphill foal. The mare is called Astona by Scandic out of Itona Fortuna. When the foal is a stallion she will sell it. Astona is stabled next to my horse and she is al lovely horse.

We just imported our keur Wellington x Ramiro mare in foal to Uphill. We are so excited to be having the first one to be born in North America, and can hardly wait for 2010!

Uphill looks like he could also jump... he is great TB lines in him. Plus Wolfgang sired some famous jumpes as well.

Just to confirm what Judy wrote, from what I hear, Uphill is standing at VDL, and they're going to make his frozen available in North America next year. As long as VDL is doing the freezing, then I'm trusting in the quality. Super dressage blood for our mares. More info. here: http://hengsten.kwpn.nl/openbaar/abonnees/details.asp?onderdeel=algemeen&lang=uk&knpnr=H0000012511

If the link doesn't work, just go to www.kwpn.nl>English Site>Approved Stallions--it will take you the database of all KWPN approved stallions.

Does anyone have a link to an online video of this stallion under saddle? Would love to see one if so.

Thanks!

Yup, we just found out last week we will be getting his frozen. I put up a web page on him. http://www.majesticgaits.com/uphill.htm The only video I could find was him at his stallion selection. Lots of pictures. Can't wait to see Debbie's Uphill foal. I'm going to have to try him this year too! Very exciting to have some new dressage blood her for KWPN. We needed it. VDL had a son of his Carlton Hill (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102911455317&s=1&e=001ZUlAkE9t_oaKO_C_OqY6N26CVy3bKLL5EUaTcX6dfEHSt gaai2qaioCI3zFdMKSlKEYDknsbqhhYC9qUiyqe6kkeP2-j95Gszcv3_f9C2_ssescOOsltEPcazm-zB3s2FpyhjMeAbzIyTEnouhD36f6vkyN_oFUjbO6PM-rye6zcb8XMr6GxDP9g7T1QSHk2otZOq_qtMBJHrSKFrxOC8w== ) selected for the stallion testing and was 4th in the Stallion Championships for the stallion show, so you can look at him. Hopefully next year we have him to carry too!.

Another COTH'er sent me a video link from their website, but I'd love to see more of this guy. Does anyone have comments on what type of mares he's most suitable for?

Agree with you all.... truly exciting to have some new dressage blood here. Be great for the KWPN and the German registries.

We wrote Kathy/Janko to see how he crosses best... waiting to hear. Anyone have any experience using him? OR has anyone seen/studied the types of mares he crosses best with?

We've admired him on our trips to Holland. A TRUE mover with three v. good gaits.

I did talk to Janko about what Uphill is crossing well with. He said that he has gone well with the heavier and lighter mares. Produces uphill and very ridable offspring. I put the foal report on his web page (http://www.majesticgaits.com/uphill.htm) on my site. Basically the KWPN puts on a lot of front.

We also are only going to be able to bring in what is confirmed orders for the frozen, so if you think you are interested, let me know so I can have it in my shipment this month.

I am really excited about this. His first test thawing was showing 80% motility. Woohoo!

Great News for Uphill!!

Just saw on Eurodressage: The dark bay KWPN licensed stallion Uphill (by Oscar x Apollonios xx) was the most popular breeding stallion in The Netherlands in 2009. Owner Gert Willem van Norel declared 354 breedings to his stallion with the KWPN society.

Uphill was the most used Dutch warmblood breeding stallion by far. The second most attractive breeding stallion was Vivaldi (by Krack C x Jazz x Ulft) with 285 registered breedings. The bay 2008 licensing champion Ampere (by Rousseau x Flemmingh) ranked third with 216 breedings.

Our Uphill baby is scheduled to arrive any minute - can't wait!!

Where is that baby Debbie! Can't wait to see. I am putting the order of Uphill in today, so if you don't have an invoice from me I don't have you included and let me know right away. The owner only wants us to order confirmed orders so email me today if you want some.
