So we have been preparing for the BWP inspection today since our foal was born, practicing leading, trailering, obsessing over every nick - her weight, etc. b/c we have the best foal we have ever bred and I was so excited to show her off and wanted her to be at her best. Horses are bathed, braided, and ready to roll.

So we are loading them up this morning and she decides to freak out, knocks into my husband hard, steps on him, falls down, and gashes her leg open on the horse trailer. So now our foal is gushing blood. The inspection is going on now, I spent close to $500 (that doesn't come easy for me) for her to be inspected, and her dam to get the H label, for the one and only event even semi close to me this year. The vet is on the way. I let the show know we weren't coming, and I'm so sick to my stomach right now. I don't know how bad the gash is, she is being a pistol about letting us do anything with her right now, so until she is under the influence I probably won't know. I just know it is bleeding A LOT.

I could just use some jingles for the filly and moral support for my pity-party I'm having right now.

Oh heavens! Jingles for the filly! Hoping your hubby recovers well, too.

When something like this happens to me, I rationalize that it just wasn't meant to be. Maybe this incident spared you a worse mishap had you gone. It's very disappointing, but that thought helps ... a little.

Many jingles!!! I very much feel your pain. I was in a similar situation in June, although it was shows (two back to back) and my gorgeous gorgeous Rascalino/Warkant filly. All was ready, loaded filly, huge commotion in trailer. She'd decided to jump the divider. Talk about a terrifying few moments. She also cut her leg, though it didn't bleed like your filly's. She's ok, and I got her back on the trailer in a week, but those entry fees, etc. don't come easy for me either and now I'm trying to save my pennies to enter two more shows.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I tried to look on the bright side in my situation: the filly's cuts and bumps were superficial and it could have been much worse. But they certainly seem to do these things at the worst times, don't they?

I feel like we're all like a bunch of cocaine addicts. The highs are really really high but the lows are really really low. I don't know how many times I've been standing around thinking 'I can't believe I'm doing this. I can't believe this is happening'! I always want to push a rewind button and try again and I always feel guilty. It's very hard for me to just accept that 'stuff happens'. I'm trying to learn that breeding and showing horses is dangerous and sucky stuff does happen. As long as I'm going to breed, things are going to come up. Be kind to yourself.

Jingles again for your filly and you.

Oh, Okggo... I'm SO SORRY.

I've been there, and I seriously know you mean you are PHYSICALLY sick.

My filly had a stupid loading moment before her AWS Inspections, and gashed the front of her neck/chest open. It did not require stitches, but I was out all that money, and she will never be able to go at liberty again to really SHOW her gaits as she would have that year.

I'm just so sorry. It's so frustrating. It's so much... EVERYTHING. So much time, effort and money. All down the drain.

Now, I'm sure there's future options, but it's not *the same.*

Hang in there. It seems to me my first five years were encouraging, and the next five were challenging. I'm entering the third five, and there's hope--but it's harder work than the beginning... one HAS to have hope, ya know?

I'll be jingling and checking back later for an update.

I was loading my filly this morning, just for practice, and thinking...hmmm when would be a good time to start wrapping? She's a year old, and I'm sure doesn't have enough sense for it yet; she'd just kick the place apart.

There are so many times when you must leave your fate to chance, and it's plain not fair for you to have such rotten luck, today of all days!

Mega jingles coming your way!

I've had things like that happen twice. The first time, we were getting ready to load and I went out into the pasture to get my filly. Something didn't look quite right. When I got up to her I saw she had a partial degloving injury on one leg and a huge flap of skin hanging down from her chest. What?! Have no idea how she hurt herself, but needless to say, we didn't go to the approvals that year. Fast forward one year and she was a premium filly (and now a premium mare) - only evidence that there was ever a problem is a medium sized scar on her cannon.

Second filly tried to jump into a stall AT the approvals and managed to rip her leg open on the metal door catch. This one wasn't too bad and the judges kindly allowed her to be presented in a fresh bandage.

Speedy recovery to your baby!

OMG what a friggin DAY. Yeesh Thank GOD to be home, lol.

Yes, Ronda is correct - like 5 minutes after I posted this the vet pulled up and I went out with him. She cut a blood vessel in the front right (why it was bleeding so bad) and cut her left hind as well - both legs required stiches. She was not too cooperative, took 3 rounds of sedation to get it done. I was totally ready to call the day a quits or to just bring her mom (they are pretty good about being seperated) - when my vet said, are you still taking her? At this point I'd pulled the braids out already and looked at him like "are you kidding?" Obviously he wasn't, and I think my brain was moosh so I said "duh, okay" and we loaded her up, knowing this place is less than 5 miles from where we live (thank goodness for that).

We got there and ended up waiting awhile, plenty long for her to come out of her drug coma - took her in the ring and I felt like we were bringing in Rocky after a fight, 2 wrapped legs, explained the morning to the judges and we went about our business. We set her free and she walked as far away from her mom as she could trying to say hi to all the spectators. After a bit she realized the milk bar was gone and came barreling over to us. She was definitely awake, I couldn't see much more then her rearing and bucking at liberty b/c I was jogging the mare (and saying many prayers under my breath, contemplating if this was the dumbest thing I'd done, would the stitches stay in, etc). Anyway, given everything we had been through and her condition, she managed to score an 80 - so I was thrilled and shocked. I'd love to know how she would have done undamaged, but alas, I'm just thankful for what transpired!

Then she was branded (as though she hadn't been through enough trauma, right?), and we did the H label with the mare (who passed, yippee) - up and down the trailer many times, a LONG day and no more freak outs or incidents (another thank GOD).

Hubby is okay but his really hurt his knee. He is having knee surgery in September and torqued the bad knee something fierce when she knocked him down.

Thank you everyone, I think the jingles really paid off for a good ending to a crazy day.

FVHC - I hear ya, believe me. I was NOT planning on going, called the show and cancelled and took the braids out. After talking to the vet we decided to go for it. We had 2 extra hands to help load her up (the vet and his helper) - and we hoped if we ran into a problem at the show we could con someone into assisting. Fortunately she was fine after the 4 of us got her up, and that is the odd thing, she has trailered before and never had a problem loading. We had her on and off probably 5 times throughout the day and she was wonderful. I'm actually really happy we did take her and get her up and down the ramp - only b/c she would have been left with a really bad experience and we would have had to work with her soon to keep her from being afraid of the trailer.

I'm dying to see pictures, I hope the photographer posts them soon.

Sometimes all the best preparation and plans can go haywire when it comes to dealing with horses.... But I'm just so glad you had a happy result, despite the stitches. ;).

Argosy punctured his femoral artery on a badly set up jumping chute at his licensing...talk about freaking out! Had to take him out of state 6 weeks later to another inspection, once he recovered to "resume" his free jumping and get scored. Happy ending, but I was a wreck as he was ready, wonderful and that "freak" thing happened. Lucky he didn't bleed to death!

Take a deep breath and give a toast to your little gal (and yourself and your hubby). You did it!!! :)

So glad you were able to make it. It's amazing that they can find a way to turn the day upside down!!

To the person who posted about practicing wrapping a yearling. We would never ship a youngster with wraps and in fact commercial shippers won't even allow it because of the problems that could arise if they get them partially off in shipping.

One thing about the breeding business you have to live with the old adage - "Horses are born and spend the rest of their lives trying to commit suicide". !!!!

okggo

Thank you again for the kind words!! ISE - your quote is SO darn true. Last year before the BWP inspection the mare I was taking hurt her leg the day before and was lame for inspection day.

I'm so dying to see the pictures, when the filly was at liberty I was having a really hard time seeing her b/c of my positioning with her dam. Hubby said she did take a couple off steps but was definitely enjoying herself.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Actually, after reading your first post, before there were any replies, I was thinking that you should try to go anyway, or schedule a private viewing with the judges if they don't have to rush off. I've seen lots of foals being shown in bandages or foals that were bound and determined to kill themselves in the stall the night before the inspection. I am so glad to hear that you were able to go and the foal scored well. Now you can dream about how well she COULD have done, but dream happily because she DID do well anyway!

One of my nicer foals missed his inspection. I had been practicing loading the trailer a few days earlier, and this day I was practicing trotting them down the sand driveway. The foal LOVED the trailer practice day, saw the open trailer not too far off, and detoured for a quick jump in the trailer. Then he ducked under the chest bar and out the escape door gashing his leg as he went through. The gash was serious enough to make him lame, so he had to stay home. The next year *I* had a baby and didn't go and the next year I took him as a 2 year old. So, what does he do before that one? A few days before he has a HUGE chunk of back hoof missing. Enough to make him lame! Grrr... The farrier fixed him up with hind shoes. The judges DO understand that these foals try to kill themselves, and usually dont' mind a few bandages or hind shoes with no fronts. He did get registered that year. And I had the privilege of seeing him last weekend (6 years later) at the Pony Club championships with his young rider where their dressage team came in first! :)

I'm glad the day ended well. After my experience, I don't recommend practicing for these things either. It just adds opportunity for injury and gives these foals more chances to try and kill themselves before the inspection. ;)

with the crazy filly lol....= ) Whaaa, my sweet innocent girl? (LOL!)

She is usually pretty docile, I really think something crawled up her bum that day and didn't crawl back out until we got home! She was nutty about loading, required multiple rounds of sedation for the sutures, and at the show you would never know she was heavily doped just a couple hours ago b/c she was raising some major hell. I don't think I've ever sweated so much in my whole life, lol.

She was beat by the winning filly by ONE point.. Yes I'm banging my head on the wall - I MUST be happy for the good and stop thinking about the what ifs.....sigh. There was quite a bunch of LOVELY horses at this event!!

Still dying for that photographer to post photos....usually my hubby takes 10,000 so I have instant gratification. He was handling with me the whole time so waiting on them is killing me - I'm a photoaholic! I'm just hoping I got cropped out of all images - I'm not kidding you, I had sweat pouring down everywhere - and both of us were SORE! Wrestling a 350 pound bundle of energy is tiring! Thankfully her mom was a super star as far as behaviour. When we finally left the grounds Belle was sacked out on her side sound asleep snoring away in the stock trailer.
