So very sorry to read this, Hookedoneventing. We are all sending you cyberhugs, and when you feel able, share some of your favorite memories of your horse.

For him, it sounds as if it was a rapid progression. For you the grief will pass after a time, but the memories will remain. Our horses leave hoof-shaped holes in our hearts!

WOW is all I can say...everyone is so amazingly nice, and no one understands the pain like all of you fellow horse lovers. Kevin was an incredible partner, I had the honor to care for him for three short years, he died at 6 and I told him before he went that I loved every minute of our partnership, I only wish I could have had more. You never know, one day they are so big and beautiful and strong and the next they are gone. I tried so hard to save him, but in the end it was useless, my only comfort is that for the last hour we laid together peacefully and I was able to rub his face with a cold towel and talk to him...he seemed to be really comforted by that...no more fighting and struggling like he had been doing all day trying to get up for me. I told him it was time to go be at peace. And now he is gone and the pain is so unbelievable....But I will never ever forget that face and all the great times we had. I was so fortunate to get the chance to share my life with him!!

Thanks again for all the kind words....

Oh, how heartbreaking. So, so sorry. I hope you can find peace in knowing that you had a great partnership (albeit tooo short) and comforted him in the end. :(

Jingles and hugs from NY

This one always helps me a little (but I let the tears flow, despite its inspiration):

"So I am glad, not that my friend has gone
But that the earth he laughed and lived upon
was my earth too.
That I had closely known and loved him
And that my love I'd shown.
Tears over his departure?
Nay, a smile
That I had walked with him a little while.

Thank you all so much once again for the kind words, it is overwhelming to know just how many people are out there that care. So far my other two are doing well, I am so worried for their health now, checking temps twice a day and feel totally helpless should they get sick too...

RIP my beautiful Kevin

Hugs to you! I'm so very sorry.

I had to put my Rudy down in April...memories of rubbing his face and comforting him while saying goodbye have flooded me while reading your post, how very hard it is to make the right decision.

It does get easier – you are grieving now, but the time will come when you will celebrate!

Save the special posts, cards, thoughts they will help with the celebrating!
