View Full Version : Major Mod Moment

MHM
Jul. 28, 2009, 02:29 PM
As I was trying to catch up on the PH thread, it suddenly went poof.

So I have to think that at this moment, some poor Moderator is slogging through 300+ posts, trying to edit out the offensive and insulting comments, which must be a daunting task.

So thanks again to the Mods who try to keep this BB somewhat civilized.

Yes, the mods do a great job - but this time they could have waited just a bit longer, so I could catch up! I missed all the "fun" yesterday and it was "poofed" just as I was starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel today.

Here in the frozen north, my dd's fabulouso trainer takes the kids outside to the snow-filled ring, chases the ponies, and yells "BAIL"! They have a BLAST - she teaches them to kick their feet out of their stirrups, throw the reins away, and get both legs over the SAME side of the horse. :D

Now kleenex for all of you to wipe off the brown spots left frm sucking up to the mods. FYI... the horse in the picture of the rotational fall was not unharmed, he actually broke his jaw,had to be wired and had to be fed thru a tube for a few months. How do I know this? I would think that you would be one of the most ardent supporters of the current moderators. In former times, I think we all know what would have happened, at least based on what I've been told happened while I was off getting dirty and stinky this morning.

Thanks to them, we are still able to hear from you. I hope you appreciate the privilege, as well as the fact that at least some of us appreciate the mods' willingness to provide maximum latitude.

You make an interesting point here which in a more collegial context might be heard with greater thoughtfulness and consideration than even now it might be.

Stick to facts, supported/supportable opinions/speculations and the odd quip or wisecrack, and you will find that even the most unpopular opinions you might express will be civilly received by most.

COTH is a tough audience. Leave it to one of our resident vets to point out the factual error of an ancient and honorable cliche. (My apologies to the porcine universe. Other than for that vile tempered sow who tried to bite my fingers when I ignored the warning sign during a 3rd grade field trip to the Ag campus in St. Paul and stuck them through the wire, I have always had great admiration for the graciousness of pigs.)

At least I didn't splatter my stall when returned to it afterward, like the distinguished Arabian gentleman I was riding did. (Fool that I am, I refreshed his water bucket so he could do it again later.)

Self-cured bacon on the hoof?

Ghazzu, little help here please: I believe there is a human metabolic disorder characterized by "maple syrup" urine in youngsters. Maybe in pigs, too. What do you think? (And where is deltawave when we need her?)

But they spatter in their stall just like your Arabian gentleman. Boys will be boys. ;)

Why do they always wait? Mares and geldings, both. (Probably stallions, too, but having no death wish I never deal with stallions.) You'd think that while having a little salad in the grass before going back into the stall, they'd just relax and let it flow.

Really strange. When in need rather than wait, this human just finds a bush. One of the few remaining privileges of being male.

Adamantane,

Can't resist commenting on your comment! Yes, there is a Maple Syrup Disease that is common in the Amish/Mennonite population. It is lethal. I've become rusty on the details but I had some experience with a family that lost an infant whose birth I attended, and who had buried another previous to that. It is a metabolic disorder that is inconsistent with life.

Thank you for your comment, Foundationmare.

My best friend some years ago was concerned about this when his first child was born. Apparently it was a false alarm -- maybe some early developmental artifact that resolved quickly -- but he was beside himself and with good reason leaving the gate. At last report the kid was healthy and pubescent.

Metabolic disorders probably are species specific, but I am not knowledgeable in that area of science, much less human or veterinary medicine. Seems to me that if one species can jump the tracks biochemically another might also do so.

Yes, it is genetic. It is seen more commonly in the strict Amish and Mennonite communities due to the fairly small gene pool to chose from. Similar in that sense to the prevalence of Hemophilia amongst European royalty into the 20th century. A cousin of my mother's is Dr. Holmes Morton, who runs a clinic in Lancaster and is involved in the research and treatment of that horrible disease.

http://www.clinicforspecialchildren.org/CSC/Home.html

They do a quilt auction to raise funds for the clinic every year, and is a good cause, so check them out.
