View Full Version : Longer Saddle Pads?

Hi--I'm looking for some good quality all-purpose AND dressage pads.....AND I need to make sure they're long enough for my giant horse/saddle. So many of them are too small--if they fit in front, they don't go all the way to the end of the saddle.
Do you have suggestions? What are your favorites?
Thanks!

If you mean long front-to-back, I've had luck with the PRI (Pacific Rim Int'l?) all-purpose pads. My saddle has a super forward flap, and they're the only ones I've found that fit it.
VTO, Horse Tack Co., and Equus Now all carry them, I think...

I hear ya. 18" saddles and horses with well-sprung barrels in this barn make most pads look like bad miniskirts. ;)
Toklat's Classics IIs and IIIs can be ordered extra long/extra deep, among other customizations. For a price, of course. I like them because they are pretty durable, and use them for my event and dressage show pads.
PRI makes some nice cotton heavy quilted pads in a variety of shapes, and many are available in extra-long. They're priced quite a bit less than the Toklats, and are substantial and attractive, and if you keep 'em outta the dryer, they don't shrink. They do, unfortunatley fade. Badly. I like strong colors (yup, three grey horses), and no matter how careful I am about sunlight, those royal blues or navys or blacks start fading after a season of riding outside.
Happy hunting!

The PRIs are GREAT. But still not enough for my jumping saddle. So, I found a friend that is an excellent seamstress and she is going to make me some. As you go through your search, will you share what you find? I need about an extra inch to make it to the back of the saddle/half pad on my PRI pads.

Or you could go with a Long Classic PolyPad that is 107x66 :D http://www.polypads.co.uk/classic.htm
The PolyPad was the only thing I could find long and wide enough for my really forward Albion that didnt have saddle touching any of Holly's 17.2H coat

I have the opposite problem! Most saddle pads swallow my 15h guy and my short flapped saddle.
I was all excited to use my new dressage pad at Champagne Run only to have my trainer teasingly ask if I was worried Chase was going to get chilly and that was why I was riding in a "quarter sheet."

Maybe it will shrink in the wash?

I got a Moxie pad (now why does that sound a little silly?) as a prize and it is quite generous lengthwise.
I think this is the one, with the bamboo:

I have been using it and I really like it. Does not slip and when I take it off the sweat is very even underneath.

I recently found these pads: www.padperfect.com
They are beautiful, large enough for my super forward jump saddle (I have never found a pad that fits correctly) and wear like iron.

Also, would a baby pad work? You know, the type that the H/J fold over in the front?
I just got my Ainsley ProNational in the mail today and am realizing I'm now pad-less...

I have the same problem with my 19" seat and extra forward flap. I have found only the Rambo pads to fit- the puffy ones without any keepers on them. I just ordered 2 of the regular square ones that have billet keepers and aren't poofy- I feel like I have used them before and they fit ok. I ordered them from Victory Canter for $30 a piece.
The Toklats also fit nicely but are a little pricey (for me anyway!)

You can go to JeffersEquine web-site and search on Roma Miniquilt - it's a dressage pad that measures 44" x 28" - only comes in black or white (black is backordered per the web-site) but price is less than $20.
There's also an AP pad - I think the length on that was something like 26-1/2".

Another vote for PRI! I think they're very generously cut. Not the cheapest, but I find they last longer than my others. I have one jumping sized one that also works under my dressage saddle. :-)

I bought a 5 Star pad a few months ago and love it. They are spendy, but come in differet thicknesses... and if you contact Mike and Laurel, they can make one to spec for you. Good luck in your search.

My AP SmartPak pad (http://www.SmartPakEquine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productclassid=6526) is definitely on the large side--really kind of too big for my saddle so it might work for some of you. The dimensions are given on the linked page.

$79.95.
Nope, they start at $65. Plus, the business gives a 15% discount if you are an Adult Rider Program member. Plus, they don't slip. I can wait to use them on my chiberta!

I just noticed in my Dover sale catalog that in the "summer bonus buys" section they have their Rider's International Piped pads listed as 26" x whatever for $13... on the last page of the catalog, they have them listed as much shorter for $14...
Any insight on this?
