View Full Version : Update on the Mare situation

If you were following the ridiculously long and ridiculously complicated saga about my/Katie-Nicole's mare, I have an update!

She's back!! The dealer, BO, Katie, and myself were able to work everything out and set the situation right. I paid the dealer what the mare cost him, and he was good enough to take the lost income without complaint. It took about a week to get the whole thing settled, but she was delivered to me this evening, and she looks great. (And to those who think that Katie was just enjoying the drama and didn't care about the horse--she lent me most of the money to buy the mare back. Actually, she offered to give it to me, but I told her I would repay it.)

I now own the mare, and everyone is happy and can leave this whole messy situation behind. The last three weeks have been hell for everyone involved, and it's a huge relief to be done with it.

AND my wonderful beautiful perfect mare can never pretend she hates me again! (She's a chestnut Thoroughbred mare, attitude is to be expected.) I checked her out on the trailer before I signed the bill of sale, and when I turned to walk off to pay the dealer and sign the bill of sale, she nickered to me  . I hadn't realized just how much I missed her until I saw her again. And then I went to unload her, and she fell/jumped off . Truly one of the least graceful equine maneuvers I've seen.

So now she's out in a pasture settling in at her temporary home (I have a couple options for a permanent home, just seeing what's going to work out best.). Tomorrow, she gets turned out with the cows. I think she'll enjoy being able to boss them around .

We got our happy ending. Everyone is satisfied, the dealer did prove to be a decent person, and my mare is back where she belongs.

I can't tell you how happy I am this all worked out!!! I played phone tag with the dealer over the weekend, we just never could connect. He sounded like a good guy, everyone was just so gun shy.

Kudos to the dealer, amastrike and her officially new mare! I hope you guys enjoy a long time together and a great partnership!

I'm sure everyone is happy that the best possible outcome was achieved for this mare and the person who loves her. Good luck with her Amastrike, all the best wishes to you both.

I was wondering how that saga had turned out. What a bunch of drama queens we all are! :) Glad to know that horse is in good hands and the buyer turned out to be a good guy.

I took a few pictures of her this morning...

I wanted a picture of her grazing, but she was more interesting in following me around than eating. Silly mare.

And then she decided I was boring and wandered back into the barn.

Being a thoughtful mare, she gave me a nice surprise this morning... a sprung shoe . So I got to practice my shoe-pulling skills. She was a very good girl while I was wrestling with her foot. She got an Uncle Jimmy's Squeezy Bun as a reward. I tried to take a picture of her head, but she was savoring the Squeezy Bun...

She's pretty content where she is. We'll see how she feels about it when she gets put in with the cows .

Wonderful news, and wonderful for the horse particularly.

Ok, so now are you, amastrike, and Katie-Nicole ready to put your hand over your heart, and promise COTH, yourselves, and your horses:

I will not make anymore leasing / boarding / loaning / buying / selling arrangements by word of mouth / assumption that everyone understands what everyone wants ever again, but will put all such arrangements into WRITING and get witnesses and keep copies so we don't ever have to do anything like this again?? Cross your heart and hope to die?

Amen to that - I promise!

I'm so ready to say "to hell with the horse world." I want to hole myself up with my fat spotted horse and not have to deal with the drama that seems to come with the horse world around here. Why does it seem that relationships in the horse world are generally unstable? I don't get it....

These last three weeks have been emotional hell. My skin is all broken out, my hair has been falling out and the bags under my eyes are the biggest and darkest they've ever been. Time for everyone to recover from this.

Amastrike - I love the treat picture. She looks so happy! Thanks for sticking in there with me!

Glad to hear she's back home, safe and sound.

Ama and Katie, I'm sure you're ecstatic to have all this behind you!

Dealing with an ugly situation at my trainer's barn right now. Suffice it to say, she'll never do anything again without a written, ironclad contract either.

As I told her, no good deed goes unpunished.

One question: is the mare still lame?

Don't know. She came when it was getting dark fast, so we just wanted to get her in a pasture while it was still somewhat light. I'll check her after work today.

Armastrike- Did you get a signed bill of sale from KN?

amastrike
Jul. 28, 2009, 10:44 PM
Yup. I've got two bills of sale--one from KN, and one from the dealer. I figure I'm covered either way .

Oh, and Lori, don't worry.. EVERYTHING is in writing now.

and she's lovely.
i hope she found a happy and safe home with you.

speaking of home, are you keeping her in the same barn with the BO who 'sold' her? i don't want to start a train wreck but if so, maybe you should give some thought to finding a different boarding facility...

Marta, she's not at the same place she was before, and she's not going there. She's pretty happy hanging out in a field next to a bunch of cows and a bull right now.

Mare + herd of cows and a bull = endless entertainment.

I took her out for a ride today.. as we were walking away from the pasture, the bull started bellowing at us. When we got back, the herd stared at us and all 20-ish bovines came running over. The mare went out in her pasture, and a couple cows were following and staring at her on the other side of the fence.. she would whip her head around and pin her ears. The cows jumped back, and the mare went back to grazing. Cows approached again, mare scared them off again. It was great .

did you have a chance to trot her? how is the lameness?

amastrike
Jul. 30, 2009, 04:37 PM
She's better than she was when she left. She's fine unless you turn her sharp-ish the left, then she looks uneven. I longed her briefly on Tuesday to check her, and she was fine otherwise. Yesterday I trotted her briefly on a straight patch and she was fine (but very very perky, lol).
