View Full Version : LOOK WHAT'S COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET!! for the Special Horses auction!

..We have loads of stuff..something for everyone to bid on. Some horse related, some not! But if you ended up doing your spring cleaning very late this year, you can still unload your unwanted but useful (or, those "interesting! Um, How nice!") goods and get a tax donation.

It's easy to do, just send your goods to the group of your choice. Doesn't need to be horsey, just something you think people will bid on, and that can raise an amount - even small - for a deserving equine 501(c)3 organization. Just let them know if you want a reserve or minimum bid. We can still throw some items up on the auction site, which will start September 1.

At the close of the auction, our esteemed Aunt Esther of The Chronicle Of The Horse Forum has agreed to choose the the classiest and er, not classiest item. The winner of each category will receive a gift basket from The Farm at Nanticoke Creek loaded with handcrafted grooming supplies and gourmet treats for you horse!

What a fabulous idea.

Is there a time frame for this auction? In other words, will it be an on-going project or do you want items donated by a specific date so they can get the descriptions written and hold the auction on a given day (or days, if this will be an online auction)?

DressageGeek "Ribbon Ho"

Good question! We'd like items donated as soon as possible. The auction will run through September - we'll accept items through the first week, but bidding will continue through the end of the month.

It is the right one. ANd if anyone needs a physical address for shipping items, let me know and I can get one. We're no longer publishing my home address for shipping items after getting some veiled threats during a seizure fairly recently. Don't need to make it any easier on the crackpots out there. :)

Well. There has been a murmur of something along those lines. But we can't promise, as Aunt Esther has very kindly agreed to help us from afar - you know, Holland, Belgium, Germany - if it weren't for the internet, really, I'd have to be following behind her, and then they would take one look at me and bar us both entrance. Especially because it's so obvious I don't know which cutlery to use for foods I can't even recognize.

But we know an item like this would bring in quite a tidy sum for a deserving equine 501(c)3!

And if not, perhaps Aunt Esther will pass the word along to Hermes...?

Because I am going to do Pro Bono work for rescues when I finish up law school, I am going to make the Ultimate Sacrifice. I am going to donate a "Bunches 'o' Peeps" package, and the winning bidder gets to choose between traditional (chix or not), flavor (sugar, peppermint, orange creme), consistency (stale or not), and color (too many to list).

Yes, I could easily down several packages at one sitting (not that I sit for them, you know, I'm not a dog), but this would be Peeps for the Greater Good.

I told my mom I wanted to have it be for the rescue with the biggest number of hot mares and she just gave me "That Look."

Yahoo, I hit the store for myself today. Took some horrid pics of great stuff I can donate to myself LOL.

We put up a saddle, some antiques glass, vases, I have yet to put up the oriental paper xmas balls, original Wendy's bears as in fast food, from the 60's still in there bags and with there shoes even.

I am going to have to go thoroughly through the store. We got some cool cool stuff which means nothing except to a collector. Look out guys.

Now to try and email all the info to my mailing list in hopes of collecting some real treasures. I cant wait. Hooray hooray, just in time to buy winter hay. What a load off of my mind.

So, would sending some brand-new horse care books be acceptable? Cute handpainted horse and dog gift boxes? Other handcrafted stuff?

I just want to be sure it's A) something you'd like to have and think you could sell  ; and B) not cause Aunt Esther to curse me for my tastelessness. :o

And to be sure I have this straight, I send the items to the groups themselves and then the proceeds from what I send go to the group that sells it, yes?

What a wonderful idea and KUDOS to all involved!

DressageGeek "Ribbon Ho"
Jul. 30, 2009, 03:11 PM
Beezer - brand new books would be terrific!!! As well as the boxes and handcrafted stuff. If you think it's sellable - I bet it will be. And remember the thread where someone bemoaned the gift of a John Deere clock, and then someone came on and begged for that very item? One person's trash, after all - which is what got me thinking about the twist for this new fundraiser.

And yes - send your items directly to our participating groups (remember, the cost of shipping is also tax deductible - keep your receipts!). They will issue you a donation-in-kind receipt. They'll then take pictures of all the amassed items, and equineartworks will assemble all for the auction site. The winning bidder then send the money directly to the organization "hosting" that item. Any item that does not meet a reserve (if there is a reserve) can then be sold at the organization's next tack-sale or fundraiser, so it's all good!

And don't worry about Aunt Esther...I'm sure she's cringing at the thought of me putting up a passel of peeps...but since all proceeds go directly to help horses in need through legit 501(c)3 equine organizations, she'll turn the other cheek. After stamping my offerings as "trash."

But hey - maybe the trash will bring in more money than the treasure!

hahahahaha a pimp my ride showplate. How funny. As I sit here and look around myself, there is a host of trash and treasure I would be so happy to be free of. This is better than a yard sale cause I dont even have to move it to the outdoors or haul it back if it doesnt sell.

Aww, thanks. I have to admit that the pewter pendant itself is actually a pre-fab piece that I've been dying to find an excuse to use in something. The beadwork leading up to it I can take credit for, though.

I have a heck of a time taking pictures of jewelry, but I did toss them on the scanner before I sent them off. The images are pretty meh, but you're welcome to use them if you like. They're uploaded here:

The white elephant bag stuff I didn't get any shots of though. It had pieces of leftover bits from lots of costume jewelry I salvaged parts from, some craft beads, and practice pieces I wasn't satisfied with. All sorts of weird stuff. If it sits around long enough without me thinking of something to do with it, it goes in the bag. For some reason although I have no problem with someone else ripping them apart to reuse the beads, I can't quite bring myself to do it. And there are some cultured freshwater pearls floating around with the rest of the stuff in there that someone could probably make something nice with. So basically I considered it a junk craft lot, but feel free to dispose of it however you see fit.

Just what the farrier wanted to hear from me. Thankheavens he understands the seriousness behind Jackson. heheh And his wife is out of town LOL. Plus, it helps that I am stashing a pony for him that his wife wont allow him to have. He has anyhow and is trying to figure out a way to sneak him in. Yah......................a 10hh black pony in with a herd of tall TB mares, he is a gelding. She's likely not to notice for a while for sure. LOL.

We are very excited to be participating in this and are happy to let you all know a few of the items donated by a generous member!

A pair of 14kt gold (about 7 grams of gold) horseshoe earrings with about ½ carat of diamonds and about ¾ carat of sapphires. They are a channel set with butterfly backs. The earrings measure about 5/8” tall, ½” wide and about 1/8” thick.

There is also a sterling silver ring with 10kt gold and bezel set gemstones including Citrine, Amethyst, Topaz, Garnet, and Peridot. The ring is size 7.

We are also intending to donate a few other items such as Secretariat Photos, some older winner's circle photos, Laffit Pincay Jr. items and hopefully other miscellaneous items!

We hope so too! And the gorgeous suncatcher is a donation from eventgroupie2 - thank you so much again!!! It's a great way to not only help a terrific equine rescue but get some people looking at your wares...hint, hint!!

We hope to make this an annual event, so that when people get those ...interesting...gifts at the holidays, they can always smile, say thank you, and inside, think, "Maybe THIS will win me the coveted Farm at Nanticoke Creek Gift Basket in the Trash or Treasure Auction!"

We need people to bid as well - so there's plenty of fun to be had all the way around.

Part of the problem is getting an advance peek at the items...I am SO lusting after one of the Secretariat photos being put up by Exceller...but as our wonderful COTH artists and craftspeople come on board with so many items, I think, "No - that! Well, this too!"

So I am going to have to start saving up! The terrific thing about this auction is that while there will be some higher ticket items, there will also be plenty of things (and not necessarily trash!) on which just about anyone can bid.

I am also donating a gift - it is a resin horse that holds a wine bottle - upside down and slightly drunken looking. I priced it and they retail for about $25, so it wasn't that inexpensive (and the giver does not read this board, so I am totally safe admitting this)...just...aghastivating (that is, to me, having the quality of making the recipient become aghasted). I don't know that it's trash - I think it's like the John Deere clock category - it will be some person's treasure!

Then again, I had some very very nice donations from Equinelaw and Cloudy and Callie and since this portion of the south has no idea of quality, it will be on the auction site. She made her plea to the director of AC4H directly, which was pointed out to you twice, and NOT to the supporters. You've been asked many times by many people to please calm down and stop acting out. You do terrible harm by being petulant and childish, and emotional shaming is a terrible thing to attach to your favorite rescues as a supporter. A nutcase volunteer does terrible harm to a rescue and turns the public off.

Cloudy, with all due respect...grow up.
I'm surprised there wasn't a Neener added to this post and your last "Well you;ve upset me and I'm donating all my good stuff to a different rescue now" post in the AC4H thread.

AC4H is a good rescue...it wasn't AC4H at all that caused question to be asked about it. It was the self designated and overly emotional supporters who did that.
If you were never asked directly by Christy to explain how things are done at AC4H, then refrain from doing so. Because if you can't stay mature online over this stuff and start going to other threads "tattling" then maybe AC4H doesn't need that type of "help."

Is there a flyer or something that could be given to local tack shops, etc. so people outside of the COTH boards can hear about this and come bid? I know there are things for which people don't want extra competition ;) , but it would help to keep this from being a glorified self-tax.

I will be sending a reconditioned 1993 Cannon Rebel film camera with a 35-135mm lens. Everyone tell your photographer friends, they still use film for some jobs. At the least, it would be a good camera to take to a show or HT if you don't want your good one wrecked in the rain!

I didn't see the due date for articles to be received, or the running period of the auction on this. A little more detail explanation of what kinds of work the benefitting orgs do as a whole do might be good too - 'equine organizations' could do almost anything with horses. Fair to assume that most people in a store won't have heard of most of these groups, or of specialhorses?

The camera and a chinese horse statue got shipped out today - the 'trash' category stuff should go tomorrow. Everyone keep hunting up buyers!

If any of you watch Nightline, watch for the horridly emaciated Paint horse tonight. His new name is Tex, and he's donating a lock of his (now clean) tail hair and an "autograph". First, HiH - THANK YOU!!!

The only difference is in the date for when we need the items.

Let's face it - if you have an item you think will bring in some money for one of our very deserving groups - we will want to put it on the auction site. The issue is that each one has to be uploaded by our Web Goddess, equineartworks - in time, she'll teach me how to help, but we're not there yet. So the earlier we get pictures and descriptions to her, the easier it will be to load the pages. She got some fabulous software donated for this purpose, and, web geek that she is, she is very excited about it. I've seen her preliminary forays and it's VERY nice!!!

The last contest ("Every Horse is a Winner") there was a massive outage in the internet services over eaw's region. For about THREE DAYS. So she would load a page and hope that she had made it in time before she lost service again. Everything had to be done piecemeal! And the best I could do was go in and fix any typos.

So we're hoping that this time things will be easier for her!

OK ... so I have some more things to send out (and I've told Mr. Beezer he has to cough up some items, too ;) ). I'm HONESTLY trying to figure out who needs more items to auction off.

So, please, oh wise ones, let me know which of these wonderful groups is still in need.

I've sent some items to Exceller (since I HEART any program that helps OTTBs) and to TIER, since that worthy organization is fairly local to me. But I've seen pleas that both TIER and Sunkissed need items.

I can split these items up, absolutely NO PROBLEM, just please let me know where I can send them to help you guys out as much as I can.

I do have the cw anderson lithos that each group will get but I figured since I will need to send them for mounting for safe shipping I might as well just hold on to them, list them for the groups and drop ship to the winning bidder

Alas, no. The few of those that remain intact are staying safely in their cases. This one is a Heredities model cast of a pony and it's pretty cute. I love the Heredities line; they do wonderful bronzes in all shapes and sizes. :)

Aunt Esther, national and international Purse Champion, is delighted to bump this thread and very touched that the directors of Special Horses had the exceptionally good taste to realize that she, Aunt Esther, is really the only choice for judging which items are the trashiest.

Aunt Esther, who pays little attention to deadlines and is simply incapable of posting photos, will be sending Louis Vuitton sticky notes to her friends at TIER today. They look like this: http://www.stylehive.com/bookmark/eluxury-louis-vuitton-small-ring-agenda-adhesive-notes-louis-vuitton-smal-21865

so is there a website yet with the pics on it? I have to plan on how to spend my few pony slated dollars!!! It's all for a good cause, wee Bonnie came from Sunkissed and now has a little girl who needs her pony "decked out" - lol.. I am having such fun this summer with both of them!! Auction site is not yet up - that will occur September 1. We have many tems - some horse goods, some photos, some crafts, some jewelry, some, um, different kinds of items. But we will have two phases:we'll put up some of the items and run bidding from the 1st through the 14th, then accept items and run a second phase from Sept 15 through the 30th.

Beezer! Thank you so much for the sterling silver pins! They are awesome and it took everything I had to put them in the auction. I love the donkey pin.

Aunt Esther, I spent the morning trying to find a picture of the LV sticky notes and just couldn't. As this item is in the original packaging, every time I tried to take a picture there was glare from the cellophane. FINALLY, I just scanned front and back. Once I'd finished and sent a lovely description to the Auction Hosts, I come on here and you have posted a link to the stickies!
