<sigh> Poor Junior! Friday morning we found him down. I think he was feeling a bit punky as he had a snotty nose and a cough for about 7 days, but we had the vet out to run CBCs and we were monitoring his temp and everything seemed okay. At lunch, we realized that he didn't drink his morning bucket. He was down in the hay and it looked like one of the mares had stepped on his head. He had a large hematoma and his eye swollen shut. His temp was 105.4. He could only stand/walk with assistance. We got him on ice as well as Dexamethasone and Banamine and rushed him to the clinic. DMSO really helped to take the brain swelling down and he started feeling much better within 24 hours. Very scarey ... I thought that we were going to lose him. He gets to come home tomorrow. He still has a "black eye", but he is eating good and his temp is normal.

I just can't believe the rotten luck this poor colt has had. If we could ever get past the hump, I think he is going to be special. He is seriously Mr. Personality, too. He is in the paddock next to the main driveway and he likes to "chase" the cars. He has a bit of an identity crisis. He enjoys hanging out with the horses but still thinks he is human. I never hear him talking to Carlasona, but he has extensive conversations with anyone who goes out to see him. :D

He was home for about 5 days. When we stopped the Naxcel, he spiked a 105 temp again. The vet changed meds. That next morning, we found him in his stall with hemorraghic diarrhea. We almost lost him, again. He has so anemic. :( Poor kid. The vet suggested that we euthanize him, but we insisted that it was a reaction to the medication. Sure enough, he responded quickly to fluids and is on the mend. We hope to pick him up tomorrow. If this poor colt didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck.

Things are looking grim again and it may be time to call it quits. We have invested well over $10,000 into Junior's medical care and now he may need exploratory surgery next week (possibly $3500 to $5000). It appears that he has an abdominal abscess. As much as we want to, we just can not justify the expense for a 50/50 chance after everything else he has been through. It is such a hard decision, but so many people have followed Junior's story that we feel his fans deserve to have a voice in this also.

It is such a hard decision, but so many people have followed Junior's story that we feel his fans deserve to have a voice in this also.

I was in a hurry this morning and there was no way I had time to go on my computer but I felt compelled to open the Coth forum and I choose to read this thread...And it was the first time so I read it all from the beginning…

How strange...

You see, the vet is coming this morning to euthanize Durango my loving dear yearling colt. He broke his elbow as a baby (three weeks) and bad luck then started to strike him.

One…two…three operations later, way over 15K vet bill, massage, Bowen therapy, hand walking all winter long… He was coming along but in the past few weeks his situation has deteriorated and the vet came to do RXs…and the prognostic is so bad that she suggest it would be better to put him down.

It is hard to take such a decision. Before each operation we were asking ourselves if we should continue or not but we did, we thought he deserve another chance. I got closer to him every single day as he needed so much special care.

Now he has decided for us … it has become too hard for him to continue his journey and he has given up…

The vet called me Thursday on the result and she is coming this morning. Those last two days were horrible. But today is worst. I know, I know it is what has to be done, he won’t suffer, in fact his suffering will end up and he will not even know what is going on… I didn’t want to be there but he trusts me so much that it is the least I can do for him.

So Showjumper … Durango is a nice little guy. If you decide that Junior should end up his misery, I will ask Durango to be there for him as a big brother…he was such a loving soul; no doubt Junior will be in good hand.

As I wrote not so long ago on a previous thread for someone who had his mare euthanatized … they will be in peace but now it is up to us to be in peace with ourselves.

So I sure do sympathized with you and I am sure your decision will be the best for both of you.

We just have to be strong for them.

Abdominal abscesses are the worst. I had one in a mare, and she didn't have a chance even with surgery. Ultrasound showed that.

If IV antibiotic drips won't cure it because of all the peripheral damage, you will be doing what is best for Junior. He has to be suffering now.

I came across this forum and your thread by accident (blame it on marestare) but have enjoyed the opportunity to revisit the things I loved about the breeding business. This is one of the parts however that we all dread and there are never the right words to make it better.

We have been tossing around some ideas about creating a Save Junior fund so that we could possibly continue as long as there were options, but don't know about how to go about doing something like that. I think that's a great idea.I have set up three funds ( a mare, a foal and a dog) and the way they were done was once we had the vet's name people could mail a check or call the vet with their cc and the vet would credit their account.
Can you post the name of the vet and their number? Do you feel all services would be done by the same vet?

Barb (and Summer), I have learned so much watching you and reading your posts on this bb and on MS. I totally respect your decisions. I am not the one seeing this poor little fellow hurt every day. I am not the one paying his bills either. I, and by all the previous posts, lots of other people also agree that you have gone above and beyond for him ... He has quite the following obviously and is very much loved. I missed his foaling, but have followed since day 1. We all love him, we all hope for a miracle.

But, if there is no miracle to be, know that we all support you. Give him a big hug for all of us and let's all hope he finds his mom among all the beautiful horses that have been called to the rainbow bridge lately.

Sorry all ... crazy day today and just sitting down at the computer. Junior's recheck today was really good news. On ultrasound, the mass was gone so they are hoping that it had been a fluid filled gas pocket. His blood work has also improved. He is still very lathargic and not normal, but things are looking up for the time being. We are to keep him on antibiotics until his next week. Again, thank you so very, very much for the support!!!

Yeah, hooray! Come on, Junior! You can do it, little guy!

On a side note, do you think something like Immunall might help give him a boost?

Yes, good news this morning. Go Junior Go!
I hope this is the LAST time you scare us like that!!
Barb, do you think all these problems are related to the fact he was orphaned or is it just bad luck?

I will be away from a computer until Monday night... hang in there Junior... and Barb... and Summer... and SilverCreek!!

Oh so nice to hear some good news. I'd like to know if all his health problems stem from him seeming to be so attached to his dam, and her passing so soon after he was born.

Jingling like crazy for Junior. My laptop went to the big hard drive in the sky, and I just bought a new one today. I hated to see the latest on Junior, but was so relieved to read the most recent good news. Hoping for good news on Monday, and I too, would be honored to contribute to a Junior fund. However it turns out for him, he couldn't have been given better care. Get well for all of us Junior. We love you little man.

Glad to hear Junior is on the road to recovery yet again (I bet he can trot down that road with his eyes closed as many times as he has made that trip LOL). This is enough Junior. Now go back to being the cute little brat you are supposed to be. The only things we want to hear about from now own are what mischief making you have been up to.

I don't know his original story, but gosh what rotten luck! I just read this whole thread, and am adding some more jingles from California!

Someone mentioned Immunall a page or two back. I have a sick foal right now that has got everybody stumped. Spent a week in ICU at UC Davis, and has been getting round the clock care here at home... we still don't know what's wrong. However, after starting her on Immunall, the snotty nose went away, and her attitude perked up within three days. I'm planning to keep her on it until after (if) we get over this. I've already spent $$$$$$ on this filly, so the Immunall is a very small expense comared to that. I'd definately consider it if I were you

Can somebody post the original story on Junior? He sure sounds like a tough little guy though!

Go to this thread http://www.chronicleforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=193350&page=71 and start with post #1408. Short version -- his mother fractured her hip (I believe) during foaling and had to be put down. He then has had one complication after another but he seems to have a HUGE desire to beat the odds. COTH has "adopted" him. :)
