I purchased a new mare a few months ago and these past two weeks, she's been coming in from her evening turn out with 20-30 bug bites that are swelled up and irritated into significant lumps ranging in size from a dime to a quarter. There are about twenty other horses at the same facility that don't seem to have the same reaction to the bugs (a lot of green heads, horse flies, and deer flies). My vet just said to fly sheet her when turned out - but is there anything else I can do to help reduce this reoccurence, help aid in a speedier recovery, etc.? She's my show horse and I don't want her riddled with these bites at a competition. And it cannot be very healthy either.
