View Full Version : Decent inexpensive stirrup leathers?

After way too many years of not riding, I am finally starting up again! And my new lesson barn will let me use my saddle (provided it fits the schoolie okay, of course)! However, somewhere along the line my leathers vanished, and I'm in sticker shock over the cost of the leathers I've seen! But a bit way of buying $30 leathers when the majority are $100+! So I'm wondering if anyone has any recs for less expensive leathers. I'm currently eyeing the SmartPak brand lined ones...

Thanks! :)

These are very nice English-made leathers if they'll match your saddle- http://www.fennells.com/store/products.asp?h1=273&i=159&buy=273&Table=Products&css=&i1=Horse+Equipment&r1=154&i2=Saddles%2C+Accessories+and+Fittings&r2=159&i3=&r3=265&sdk=Stirrup+Irons%2C+Leathers+and+Pads

My internet is acting up and I've tried a hundred times to post about Gary Mundy...I recently got some leathers from him and only have good things to say. He has a lot of options so you can get exactly what you want. High quality product and fantastic service...highly recommended. I think his prices start at $45 (really great price for what you get).

Gary's leathers have been discussed here several times (ALL good!), and he, himself, has also posted here. If you search on "Mundy", you'll probably find those discussions.

Suffice it to say, though, I'm another of Gary's very satisfied customers. Fantastic leather, worksmanship, and very reasonable prices. He goes the distance, and then some.

I use Dover's ultimate adjust children's leathers. The adult length are expensive, children's were about $20 and I bought them 5 or 6 years ago . I'm average height and they are nowhere near too short for me. They have stretched some, but are still in great shape, and are narrower than regular leathers, which I think looks nice.

One quick question for those who have gotten leathers from Gary Mundy - smooth side out or rough side out?! So many choices!! ;)

Thanks!

Rough side out - I didn't know what he was talking about (and thought surely I want the smooth side out...) but he assured me that rough side out is the "normal" way aka the way most leathers are made.

I was just looking at these the other day, because I'm short and need the 48" leathers :) But I didn't like the fact that they were only 3/4" wide, and I figured they'd stretch a lot ... anyone know of any other disadvantages to the narrower leathers?

I don't know why you would even want the wider leathers, aside from being "out of fashion" if that bothers you, the narrower ones are more comfortable IMO. I loaned a pair to a friend of mine and she immediately went out and bought her own, she said she never realized how much "bulk" the 1" leathers were under her leg and she would never go back. Mine are nylon lined so they don't stretch at all, another benefit.

Gary's leathers are one of the ONLY things that the entire board agrees on... GOOD STUFF!

If everyone on COTH likes something, that means it's pretty much perfect. :)
