Hey everyone, I think my mare Welina could use some jingles sent her way. She had colic surgery on tuesday night and it was one of the worst cases the vet who operated on has ever seen. She came out of it alright but her body is not starting to heal. She still has a tube down her throat bringing up stuff from her stomach and her small intestine hasn't started to work yet and she just seems so depressed.
I'm worried sick that she is not going to pull through...
This is my princess and I think she could use everything she gets.

I used to work at a horse hospital and they had some limited success with accupuncture treatments being used to help get the gut working again - the reflux they are syphoning back off is because the gut is not working to pull the fluid from the stomach - just a thought, and some vets/surgeons think Accupuncture is voodoo science, my opinion is if it won't hurt I would try anything to get the gut working again.
Big Jingles for you both!

And ditto the acupuncture thing. Marvin Cain (first vet to do acupunture on animals after studying in the orient) has had tremendous success with treating colic with acupuncture. I saw this with my own eyes with a chronic colicer. It can't hurt. Good luck, keep us updated.

Thanks everybody. I'll talk to the vet know about acupuncture tomorrow when I go out. She is basically the same today so at least she is not getting any worse. Thankfully the staff at Mid-Atlantic (the hospital) are all wonderful and are very attentive to her.

I will be thinking about you guys. My boy had colic surgery 10 years ago and also went through a very rough time. He refluxed massively from the surgery Sunday until end of the day on Thursday. Just don't give up hope yet. You are doing everything you can for her.

Another update : She is still on IV only and very quiet but the refulx has gone down quite a bit ( i think i would be too if i was only living off IVs for a week...) so we think this is the turn around point where she is finally going to start getting better

Thanks again to everyone for the jingles! On Tuesday the reflux was basically gone and yesterday she was pretty much feeling like herself again. She is off the tube and allowed minimul grazing and water and on her handwalk was trotting circles around me trying to get to the grass because all she wanted to do was eat. Now she just has to stay at the hospital until she is on her normal food ration and doing fine with it :)

Great news! I know how worried you must have been - I went through this in August of last year and Genius's surgery didn't require a resection although he did have a heck of a gastric impaction.
So glad your mare is doing well!

I can't say enough good things about Mid Atlantic. My guy was there five months ago for colic surgery - he was on the table five hours after the first signs (he had an entrapment). They also recently did surgery on another horse I know well. Maybe if all goes well she will be home by Monday!

I didn't realize your girl was at Mid Atlantic. Dr. Doran did my guy's surgery, let me watch the whole thing, gave me daily phone updates and let me visit him daily. Truly a top notch facility for colic. Your girl was in the best of hands.

They really are amazing there. Dr. Doyle did hers and she was great. I could have watched but I didn't want to. I went in and saw her ont he table and walked right back out. I have daily updates as well and they were great on days I couldn't make it out there.

That is great news!!!! Don't rush to take her home - it's cheaper to stay another day than to have an emergency call. They will let you know when she's ready. I am so happy it's working out so far.
