Half Lease, Partial lease

I undertand that all leases are not created equal. However, is there a guide to charging for partial lease, say 2 days/week vs half lease? Any suggestions on what to add to the lease? Thanks in advance for your advise.

Disclaimer: I have never done a lease on my horses.

That said, I have watched several friends do part-leases on their horses and have discussed the issues with them.

The starting point for most discussions re: lease fees was based on the board -- half lease was priced at half the monthly board. Whether or not half the shoes and half the routine vet costs were included varied, mainly according to the cost of the horse and his expected uses. I.e., trail riding horses = no; show horses = yes. A two-day a week lease would be something like one-fourth of the board amount.

The one thing that cannot be emphasized enough is 'Get Everything In Writing': who rides which days; how to handle missed days due to horse illness / rider illness / vacation; how to handle switching days; how to handle taking the horse off the property; insurance issues, etc, etc, etc.

All of these things are negotiable and there is no one-size-fits-all template -- the parties need to talk it all through and be flexible (to a certain extent) to arrive at an arrangement that works.
