View Full Version : colored shirt under shad? even if you can't see it?

I probably have too many show shirts for my own good (i have the toughest time deciding which one to wear each time!) and here is my predicament
I have an A show on sunday, and i'm doing the M&S classic.
i've worn my white shirt for the past several shows i've gone to, and i'm getting a little bored. so i was thinking i'd wear one of my shirts with *some* white in it. i've got a white one with very tiny light pink stripes, and another with light lavender stripes. in the sun, you can barely tell it's not white.
i tried on my shad again today just to make sure, but my breeches go up high enough (i never show in low rise) that the vest points of my shad are overlapping my belt line. as in, you really can't even see the shirt i'm wearing underneath. if i stretch back far, or like, i don't know, puff my chest out or something then yeah, you can see my shirt. but otherwise? no. (and, these are all things i would not be doing on-course).
but i'm pretty sure the wee inch or so of my sleeve cuffs will show.
now, really, if the judge is looking so hard at my attire that he can tell the difference between solid white and a faint lavender stripe on white, then he's probably not focusing on my course.
but i don't like to be inappropriate or disrespectful, or any of that. i dress fairly conservatively at shows. my shad is all black with canary points. none of that hot pink shad lining for me!
but honestly, is it something that would bug a judge? would it be considered rude? i really don't think it'd be noticeable unless i was standing a foot away from the judge. but i always worry about these tiny things

Well, you're probably right that the judge would not notice. And really, if he does, and it matters for your round, we should all ride as well as you.
But IMHO, a shad is about as formal as it gets and really should have a plain white shirt.

I'm with Jaegermonster. Wear the plain white shirt if you're going to wear the shadbelly.

I agree with Madeline and spmoonie- not to be mean but it doesn't really matter.
Plain white, in my opinion, is the safest and classiest choice with a shad and always looks very nice. Good luck showing!

This sounds to me like the perfect opportunity to go shopping for a more interesting white shirt.
There are literally TONS of gorgeous choices out there... white shirts don't have to be boring. Find one with an interesting tone on tone pattern, or beautifully woven fabric. Perhaps one with cuffs and collar that are lined (on the inside, please!) with a contrasting fabric, or one that has really gorgeous buttons. Then find yourself a really stunning stock tie, perhaps with a bit of quiet piping, and you will be all set.
I have one very similar to this that I wear with my shad; it is interesting, but in a subtle way: http://www.shopsaltare.com/Show_PrivateCollection_Category_Description.aspx?i dproduct=46

White for sure!
Personally, I don't have a problem if you absolutely cannot see the shirt underneath. This is especially probable if you have another division to run to.

It is possible to wear a colored shirt and but a stock tie and shadbelly over for the classic, especially if there is no time to change or to do so would force you into port-a-potty world. If you have time to change to a white shirt then great. If not, and the judge picks out those little pinstripes, then he/she should really consider an alternative career, cuz it is all about the trip NOT the outfit!

Well, I guess my white shirt isn't as boring as I make it out to be  it just gets boring because i've worn it for the past several shows I've been at when I've got a number of other pretty shirts to wear! It's white but with a very very tiny pink pinstripe (a light pink at that. and really, even when I look at the mirror, i can barely tell the stripes are there) but the inside lining on the cuffs and collar is a pretty bold pink with white polkadots, so at least when i'm not riding i can roll my sleeves up and fold collar so it shows :) And it was so sunny that I could barely see the pink when i looked at my own wrist.

This is my take, and I never even noticed this until I saw this thread. At HITS over the weekend, Adult rider, doing eq and hunters, of course they all run together, rider got off and put on her shad for the classic, which is fine, shad didn't quite fit right, but hey, not overly noticable, but had on a show shirt and ratcatcher with her name embroidered across the front, show shirt was def darker, she then pulled out of her pocket a crinkled up tie, the big long ones, not even sure the proper name, but decided to not wear it, just keep the show shirt on with the ratcatcher, had enough time to put the big tie on.
I guess my point is, there were many with just the show coat on, in this instance, why bother with the shad if your not going to go all the way, and honestly, with the tie, you really can't see much of the show shirt, so that is not really the issue, but if your gonna wear a shad, do it 100%.
