I have what is probably a very dumb question yet nontheless I do not know the answer. I am sure I could look it up in the rule book but thought it might just be easier to get the answer here.

I have a horse that I am showing this year in the A/O hunters and first year greens on occasion. Assuming that I continue to show him in the A/O hunters next year without jumping 3'9" or showing him in the second year greens does that still count as his second green year or does a horse only break its second year green when it actually shows in the division? To put it another way - if I show my horse for two years at 3'6" is he still eligible second year green that third year?

TIA

a horses 'First Year" and "Second Year" status are based on showing 3'6" or above. So a horse that is a "second year" is a horse thats in its 2nd year of showing 3'6" or above. Basically yes, if you show your horse in the A/Os next year, that will be his "second year". After that, all you have is the regulars. Hope that makes sense

Next year he will be "a second year" whether you show him again or not.

However, if you were to not show the horse at all next year (say he had to sit the year out for an injury or something) the following year, he would still be eligible for the second years. But yes, if you show him at 3'6" next year, that counts as his second year.
