My Corgi, aged about five years, is sometimes very off in her left hind. If I walk her slowly it becomes functional again and she then trots and runs normally. then she may lie down for a while and when she gets up sometimes it appears to be hanging uselessly and she might hop and then use it as though it is very painful. Any information would be very much appreciated.

She could have a chronic cruciate tear, or she could have a patellar luxation (see other thread), or she could have a few other injuries.

Either way, a physical examination by your vet would be able to differentiate which problem is which pretty easily, if it is an orthopedic disease like that. Radiographs may be needed as well.

No advice, but Tribble the sable Corgi sends get-well barks.

i word about cruciate repair...
i have a 5 year old jack with a cruciate tear... with the smaller dogs they can typically heal ok. they will have arthritis, they will probably have arthritis if you pay 1200 for the SX as well. keep excess weight off and little turnout/running for a few months.
my jack did this in the fall, she was off for 3 months. she is now 80 percent better and only seems to be bothered first thing in the AM and after running and playing a while.

discuss it with you vet of course, and get rads/check for drawer, etc... but don't jump the gun to SX, you can ALWAYS have SX done later if rest and pain meds doesn't help.... JMO

My now 10 yr old Corgi/JackRussell/whatever has had CCL replacement (RH). He showed no symptoms until one day - I heard a bark in the backyard while I was bringing the recycling down the driveway. He was 3-legged lame. This was almost 2 years ago. He now has fishing line in his leg.

He has made a full recovery. :)
