My 3 y/o fell during our last ride (monday) and hit her knees, because it had rained earlier in the day the ground was softer and did lessen the impact. The soft ground was not cause of the fall. She fell on a two stride straight away just coming out of a smaller trotting circle, Since she has had balance issues when we first started trotting and occasionally still does, still growing, and will need a trim in a week, Im assuming all those just went against her and sent her tumbling on down.

She had very minor swelling and heat and was very obviously sore for the couple days after. But now seems to be moving normally at the walk, well she was walking normally anyway so that's no judge. I haven't checked her trot today, and she normally doesn't just randomly trot in the pasture when Im around, she tends to hang by the fence and make faces at me.

Ive been hosing and applying mineral ice to her knees.

Im wondering about the approximate recovery time for a knee impact, she did hit both knees. If she trots easily when I check her today when do you think I can pick back up on her schooling? Since she is growing still and I am in no rush for showing, I don't feel any pressure time wise to just hop right on and get to work. Thankfully the work Ive done with her has been good solid work and well established. I have no worries about her forgetting anything we have worked on thus far.

Normally when Ive encountered knee impacts (other horses not my own) They are checked out that day, if deemed sore, tried to work through it, if not able to then given a couple days off then put back to work if sound on the ground. Thats just what Ive seen, however These horses were not 3 years old and growing either. Id rather be a titch safer time wise than to try and rush it too fast, even if my rides are mainly walk and trot sessions.
