gotta big ole problem...
i bought a weatherbeeta airflow fly sheet this spring for my brown TB gelding. i bought it sans hood... i hate to see horses covered from head to toe in a fly sheet... the sheet claims to prevent up to 75 percent UV/ fading. my brown gelding looks buckskin by september, so i thought, what the hell...
not thinking about his neck at all, until i removed his fly sheet after a few weeks of non stop wear (he lives outside 24/7 with a run in)...
WELL.... now his neck is tan, while his body is the perfect shade of chocolate.... i will have to dye his neck before i take him anywhere...
at any rate, i emailed weatherbeeta about buying a hood seperately. they don't do that. i like the sheet, and it wasn't cheap, i'd sure like to use it next year, but i need to do something about his neck. a sleazy would be too hot i think. any other suggestions? it would need to be something at least a little UV resistant.
he has a clear line at his shoulder from the sheet. he looks rediculous.

Hehehe - maybe you could buy a non weatherbeeta hood and connect it as a make-do fix?

Aww poor guy! I'd just get a any hood you can. A little mismatching is better than bad tanlines!

Maybe you can find someone who bought sheet + hood and no longer wants the hood?

Horseware sells the hoods separately, I bought an amigo one, I think they also have them for the rambo's!

LUCKILY.... the tack shop had someone who bought a turtleneck and didn't want to neck cover and extra fleece and straps, so I got to buy them for $10. Woo Hoo! Ask at your local tack shops and see if anyone abandonded one.

I have that airflow fly sheet. Mine came with the neck guard which I didn't know till I took it out of the bag. I'm now hooked on them for the big guy.I wish it was heavier duty thoug...it's pretty trashed after a month of wear.

I agree with the other post...Amigo or Rambo. I used to have a Weatherbeeta and it didn't last a week! I got an Amigo Bug Buster and have used it for 2 years and it is fantastic!!! I think their quality is much better.

hahaha! And that is why my guy has a hood and a fly mask...dark bay from head to tail. Now, I do know that the Rambo (Fly Protector) hoods can be bought separately (at least from one of the tack shops here in Canada). It is also UV shielding and there is a good chance it may fit as there are a lot of closures along the neck.

I second the Rambos...this one I have has lasted for 3 summers now and my mom has been able to easily do the minor repairs it's needed and they were all on the binding, not the actual sheet mesh itself which still doesn't have a rip or a pull--great sheet.

WELL.... :

Does that bother anyone else?
Horse blanketed for weeks, not even checking underneath?

i run my hand under his sheet EVERYTIME i feed, to check esp at the wither area for rubs or whatever... but i don't remove it much. there is no reason to so long as the sheet is in good repair and not rubbing him.

i hate to give up the sheet, I LOVE IT, and he's really easy on sheets, i had a super cheap one for years that othere than being nasty is in pretty good shape.

i will try to look around for a hood. i don't care if it matches... he already looks rediculous, better to be mismatched in the pasture than mismatched in public...

i'll get some pictures asap. :) so you can all see what i am sure you are picturing... everyone i've told has laughed out loud. esp. since they all know how perfectly groomed he is anytime i take him out in public...

I saw a dark bay horse at a schooling show recently who had clearly been a victim of the same thing. He did look pretty silly. :D The good news is that his winter coat will start coming in soon, and then he'll be the same color again!

A perfect reason to have a gray horse!!! I sure never have to worry about fading necks, or color at all for that matter, my curse is in trying to keep the filthy rat clean after turn out !:lol::lol:

Schneiders sells just neck fly attachments. They also have a summer slinky that is made of some sort of white breathable fabric that looks interesting in the catalog. . .I was going to buy one to use to keep my guy's braids clean and in, but then I decided not to show this year.

THANKS! i checked them out, and really good price on a plain hood that is up to 80 uv protection... sounds perfect! not that it will do any good this year, but next year we'll be rocking! :) this wouldn't be the first time my horse has seen dye... i dyed his mane and tail last fall show season since it was burnt looking actually helped to condition it! ... bown is a crappy color... :)

but i wouldn't own gray! LOL too much elbow grease involved, instead of tan lines you'd have grass and poop stains to worry about! :)

there are downsides to every color.... except chesnut... they don't fade badly, they never look real dirty... hmmm.... next time i'll shoot for chestnut! LOL

You're welcome! I love Schneider's horsewear, particularly for my "chestless" saddlebred. The blankets with the velcro adjustment at the shoulder for custom fitting are the only ones that work on him.

Hey, man, the summer isn't over yet, and 24/7 of outdoor living means he will still be seeing plenty of sun this season. It would be worth the time and money, (and hair shades), to buy it now and protect him from any more fading.
