Does anyone know if a standard bred mare who was on regumate long term to suppress heats while racing who is now retired and has developed difficult behaviors is suffering from some physical withdrawl issue? Or could it be that has she just never learned to handle the normal level of estrogen? Or perhaps other factors not related to the regumate are involved.

Yes.

All of the above.

How long has she been retired?

They normally need a let down time... to get EVERYTHING out of their system.

Regumate can be mildly tranquilizer like, and is used in geldings for that... :uhoh:

A low starch/HIGH FAT diet, ala EPSM can help marey mares. The starch level being low is important, but the added fat is equally important as it is key in estrogen transport.

Magnesium can help. Vit E & Se can help. Red Raspberry leaves can help.

There are lots of natural things that can help in the transition, but the let down period can be pretty important for some. Some need at least a season just turned out and being 'a horse.' Others can take up to 6 mos or more...

Editing to add: if she has another 'female' issue going on, the Regumate could have supressed it. In the grand scheme of things, a palp and an ultrasound are VERY CHEAP diagnostics, and are definitely the place I'd start...
