Once you have decided on which fence posts to go with...

What is the best paint to paint the treated fence posts with? Oil-based, Latex-based?

My completely worthless opinion is that I prefer the inexpensive black fence acrylic paint you get in 5 gallon buckets for 20$.

If you have goats - be aware they like to follow you around while you paint and drink the paint out of the bucket.:sigh:

HAAAAAA! My dog thinks latex paint is delicious as well. Oh, and caulk, too!

Black asphalt fence paint from TSC is cheap but it has to be warm out to put it on or its like spreading marshmellows! Haven't had anyone try to chew it yet but warning - don't get it in your hair!

I switched to this after they took creosote off the market.

Somehow I don't think this would be a problem, as our temps have been in the 100's for the last couple weeks, LOL:)

Should I paint the whole fence post before putting in the ground, or just worry about the part left out of the ground once they are in?

If they are green, I would wait or the asphalt paint will bubble from the chemicals.

We planted the posts and then waited for a couple of weeks (it was cooler weather) and went back and painted them. It is also easier than trying to paint them on the ground.

No knowledge here because I've always used asphalt or oil based, but knowing the chemistry of treated wood I'm doubtful that acrylic or latex will stick very tightly to a treated post.
