Anyone know of any American Foxhound breeders or rescues? My son is thinking he wants a Foxhound. We had one several years ago. He was so beautiful and had a wonderful voice. One of the sweetest dogs we have ever owned. I was thinking some of the hunt people might know of a good place to find one??

There are 399 of them listed on petfinders.com right now. I bet there are several near you.
I highly recommend them. We were adopted by one last Sept and she has turned out to be a super dog.

If you want to come to the CT/MA border, let me know, and I will put you in touch with the hunt folks.

Jump on over to the Hunting forum. Hunts often retire hounds to a future of housepet, and a "retired" foxhound isn't necessarily an old-in-years dog. I'm sure someone in that Forum can help you.

Not exactly local, but Middleburg will be retiring some of their hounds this year.
We got one at Christmas, and she is the BEST HOUSE DOG. House-broken in 20 minutes, no fuss, sleeps on "her spots", only gives tongue when she is in the kitchen, and she always "helps" me cook. ;)

Yes, I almost posted in the hunt forum, but thought since it isn't strictly horse related, it might be better to start here.:)
I will talk to my son about adopting a retiree from the hunt. Thanks for your replies to my querie. Once I know more about what he wants to do, I'll get back to you.

I LOVE American foxhounds. They are long legged, elegant, long eared, sleek, fast, and rather sensitive in temperament. Ones that are retired from hunting can make lovely pets, but they don't have very long lifespans, considering that the pet life is a second career. My personal experience is that I only get four or five years post hunting.
If you do adopt from a hunt, ask if the hound has been checked for Leishmaniasis. It can cause some very distressing ailments as the hound ages.

There are a LOT of hounds in shelters, especially in rural areas. Here in Southern VA, it's not uncommon for hunters to dump the ones who don't hunt well. I have 2 hounds: Charlie (an AFH), and Minnie (a bluetick). They are wonderful house dogs, although they do like to spend a lot of time outside, just lounging on the deck.
They are also very good with cats. I got Charlie as a little puppy (a runty reject from a hunt), and our resident cats promptly smacked the crap out of him. He's still cowed by felines, even now that he weighs 70+ pounds. Minnie was a roadside rescue, and she never showed any ill-will towards the kitties.

Yeah, I posted two from our rescue in the Giveaways forum this week!
We have a purebred male black n'tan coonhound and a walker hound or foxhound ... she was found injured in the road and no owner has come forward.
Our rescue has done all vetting, see the Giveaways post for info on how to adopt one for no charge!
