I am wondering if anyone knows where we could find an aluminum ridge cap for our barn, it is at least 60 feet long. The original one got torn in a storm, and the one that replaced it is not wide enough and is not alumimun. We need one at least 24 inches wide. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to locate one?? I understand metal roofs of any kind are really expensive now so we don't want to redo our roof--its just that the replacement is not wide enough so we get some leaks!! Don't like that in the hayloft!!

I would call around all your local metal roof suppliers. You may have to special order an extra wide cap, but they should be able to get you whatever you need.

Places like Metal Mart and such metal fabricators, where you can buy the metal parts to build barns, would be my first guess for such.
You could ask a metal barn builder in your area where they get their materials, if you can't find them yourself in the yellow pages.

You can google metal barn builders and call/ask them. I know Fabral is a national company - google them and search for dealer locator. We get all our tin through our local dealer and prices are really low right now (1/2 the price it was last year this time- from $4.09lf to $2.11sf same tin/color).
Also- I know Lowes carries a similiar product- not all tin- it's a hybrid of some material. Maybe you can check with them/Home Depot for a cap?
Good luck!

Our barn roof is aluminum so we are looking for a new aluminum ridge cap, not tin. I think the one that is too narrow, the replacement one is tin, and it is leaking--so need a repair before our hay for the winter gets put in the hay loft. Sigh.

Google aluminum roofing Virginia. You'll come up with at least a few hits. It you can find a nearby company, they should be able to bend you anything you want.
Just curious, is your ridge cap 24" long on each side or 12" for a total of 24"? 24" would be a monster of a thing, and I don't think I've ever seen one that wide.

I think it is 12 inches on each side. for a total of 24 inches. Unfortunately we didn't keep the one that got torn off in a storm but at the time it was replaced they were unable to get one as wide as what we had, hence the problem with leaks along the ridge line becuase it is not wide enough.

A ridge cap! That's it!
Sorry, don't have any suggestions where to get one but I've been trying to think where I can find a premade piece of metal in that shape and this thread just reminded me that a ridge cap is exactly the shape I need. :D
Back to the suggestions of where to get them....

Lowes can order you an aluminum one in the size you need. I've ordered them before. If the associate looks at you like you are crazy, go to the commercial sales desk and get those guys to do it.

I think I have the measurements all wrong. The ridge cap won't have to be 12 inches on each side, it looks pretty small right now. It is a two story barn with a pretty steep roof, but mr talloaks will have to crawl up there and do the measurements. Its more than 60 feet long ago. Just wish we had kept the a piece of the original cap that torn off in the storm but of course we were told this new one would work out fine.
There are many suggestions here which are super--and once we find the right matierial in the determined size we will have to find workers to go up on the roof to do the job.
Maybe I need to start with a metal roofing company in my search. There are only so many things we can do ourselves and no one feels like a monkey on the roof!!

You really need someone that knows what they are doing looking at that.
They may be able to add some kind of flashing to what you have and be fine, not need a whole new cap.
When in doubt, getting the experts on the job may in the end save, not cost more.:)

The guys who put on the narrower cap "because that was all the could get from the co-op" came back and stuffed styrofoam under the lip. Still leaks in a rain or particularily in a storm.
