In a recent magazine, I think it was Janet Foy was mentioning that a score of 5 now has a different and more negative meaning. Can someone more knowledgable than myself expound on this?

It used to mean "sufficient", now it means "marginal". I guess too many people were happy with 5s, so they want to let you know it still needs work.

A score of 5 now means "marginal," as of last December, I believe. I am paraphrasing, but the feeling was that the previous words of 5 = sufficient and 6 = satisfactory were too close together, and that a 5 really was not a score that meant everything was hunky dory.
