View Full Version : Anyone NOT have a "Big Red Barn"?

Hi all....first off, I just want to state that I'm interested not in stables, but more in the giant hay/dairy/whathaveyou barns that are often located right next to a nice old farm house. You know, gorgeous wooden floors, several levels, etc. NOT usually a horse barn, unless they're in a lower level.
My barn is currently painted in typical barn fashion: fire engine red, with white trim. HOWEVER, my house is going to be changing over to green within the next year or so, and I think that a green house and red barn is going to look a little too Christmasy for my tastes. I'm also not a red fan in general, and the barn is due for a new coat of paint.
So, who has their barn painted something besides RED? What color is your house? (Pictures, pretty please!) Are you having any issues? (For example...I like grey barns....but do they show dirt/mold more?)
Thanks in advance! And once again...I'm not particularly interested in horse barns....just those big old wooden loft barns sitting next to your farm house! :)

Well, my barn isn't right next to my house but pretty close. It's a multi-species barn but in a raised center aisle design (2nd floor is a workshop).
It's a darky stormy grey (I think it's called ocean storm or something) and white trim.
Oddly enough the grey color makes it blend in to the background more than a green barn. (the machine shed next to the house is painted green and then I decided I didn't like it but I ran out of paint and never got around to repainting it). Grey doesn't seem to show dirt at all. But it is a dark grey.
We're working on the ramshackle house now and I'm working on exterior colors - I'm going with the palette from Falling Water (Frank Lloyd Wright House). Mr. JSwan had a fit when I said I wanted all the structures to match (he hates painting).
Today I feel like everything should be chocolate truffle (creamy brown) Dusty Trail trim (putty/yellowish color) and the famous Cherokee Red for an accent color).
Tomorrow I may change my mind. Then change it back. Aw heck I don't know....

It's your prerogative as a wife to do that. Says so on the marriage license somewhere. At least that is what I have heard.

My barn is small...24x40 with a 13 foot peak height. So nothing next to the typical gorgeous old style huge red barns.
When we put it up I painted it a ppale tan color to match the house. It has a brown shingle roof and white trim. It *had* navy blue doors with white cross hatch trim but I had a horse that thought removing the corss hatching was hilarious...so now they're just two blue doors with a couple lonely looking pieces of white wood left here and here.
I'm going to replace the doors at some point and will probably paint them black. I'd also like to have someone in to powder coat my stall trim and bars black too...they're silver now. My house is light tan with what used to be (they faded a bit) cranberry colored shutters and front door but I'm painting the shutters and door black.
My barn and house aren't very close to each other, about 300 feet apart. And about 60 feet different in elevations. But they still look nice in matching colors.
Someone I know on another BB painted her barn a deep espresso brown color with the yellowish cream trim and it looks fantastic.
But honestly my fave color barns are the ones left wood color and stained and then with a nice contrasting roof color. Those always look nice IMO, but tough to do unless it's new I'd bet.

My grandparent's dairy barn was white (it blew over during a bad storm several years ago, no livestock in it) and most of their neighbors have white barns. They have one friend who has a yellow barn.

Our barn is dark chocolate brown with black trim. I wanted the trim black so that I could coordinate with wrought iron hangers for plants and such. The barn blends into the surrounding trees.

My barn is a dark eucaplyptus-y green. No trim yet  but I love it. This year it has a container full of salmon and pink petunias in front of it and they really pop, LMEqT picked them out and I was cringing but they look great.

My website, www.pirouettefarm.com (http://www.pirouettefarm.com) shows our particular color combo. It is now in Vermont, but we first chose those colors for our 1731 farmhouse in Acton, MA. The multi-storied gambrel barn was only 50 feet from the back door.
The colors originally came from a Benjamin Moore "Williamsburg" paint brochure.

My barn is black. It is 36' x 30' and is an old cattle feeding barn with a 6' wide raised concrete center aisle that runs length wise. We just moved here so I am in the process of making it work for the horses.
This is the barn with the house in the background :

And this is the other side of the barn after we finished cutting holes in the wall and putting in dutch doors :

My barn is white with a hunter green roof and trim (crossbucks on doors and wainscotting). House and cottage are cream with hunter green shutters and white trim around windows, etc. and slate colored roof. Ultimately we are goingto redo the outside of the houses and they either will be white with white trim and stone accents or pale grey with white trim and stone accents (wainscotting, stone addition, and hardscaping).

Thanks MistyBlue! The guy that did the work was fantastic and extremely reasonably priced too! I am super excited to be putting horses in those stalls tomorrow!

I grew up on a New England dairy farm, and the barn was painted a light gray, same as the house. Possibly because the barn was "attached" to the house, via the milk parlor and the tractor garage.
My other grandparents had a barn on their property that was painted green. The house was white with green trim, and the barn was the same green as the house trim, with white trim. It looked nice.
Sorry, I don't have pictures.

Mine is 30 x 40 but is two very tall stories high. It also has a 14 over hang for the horse trailer on one side and is getting another 14 foot over hang over the other side.
It is light sage green with deep purple trim, and deep blueish green trim. The roofing is duroid and has the colours in it too.
If I could figure out how to attach a pic, I would. It sounds terrible, but it looks really nice.

Both the house and barn on the CH homestead are white with black trim. The barn needs painting more frequently than I might like, but it's small, so not that difficult to do and, on the whole, it looks pretty sharp.

Our old dairy barn is the traditional white of dairyland Wisconsin.
I heard a historian explaining that "paint" was made from waste
milk in early times so white or a cream shade would be traditional.

Sage green barn with white roof and trim. It's a shedrow style 24X72. House is Taupe. They are neutral colors that compliment each other well.

We had the same problem. Our tan house is relatively close to the barn so we had to pic something neutral as well for the barn. I love the way it turned out.
Maybe it's getting dark outside in this pic because the brown isn't this dark in person.

I have 2 barns. One is traditional red/white for the horse barn, and the bank barn is white with a green roof. The bank barn was here when we moved in. Both barns are not close to the house. The house is brick, so it would have matched just about anything.
Here is a pic of the bank barn: http://www.windyspringfarm.com/ It is from the early 1900's (not too early, maybe 30's or 40's) and was refinished with off white plastic siding and a green metal roof with matching cupolas. It has some translucent siding on it for light. I considered doing my horse barn in the same color scheme, but I really wanted red. ;)

Very few "barn red" barns around here. Most are white, but there are lots of other colors. Mins is "nantucket blue". But I also know of several green ones that look very nice.

Our barn is a 153 year old horse barn that is painted yellow with white trim, green roof. Solid as a brick **it house too. ;)

My house is red brick. My historic barns are red wood. My new barn is hunter green. Instead of repainting old barns/buildings (3) we decided to put a matching (darn close) tin over the existing wood. Now all buildings (ok.. 2 of 3) are green and we are working on the last one!
The help house and feed house were painted hunter green to match as well. I put charcoal grey roofs on new buildings. the old ones/house have black tin.
