View Full Version : How Many riders on one horse at a show?

Hi all. I've been reading through the rules and can't find reference to my question. I'm entering my very first recognized show and plan to ride two Training Level tests. Is it permissible for a friend to ride my horse on the same
day in one First Level test? The entry form seems to assume only one rider.
Thanks !

Yes, that is permissible since you are showing consecutive levels (training and first.) It requires 2 entries, however. Each entry form is meant for one horse/rider combo.

There is a rule limiting a horse to two consecutive levels regardless of any other situation.

Poor horse !
Are 3 tests too much for one day ?

It's a lot, but if your horse is really in good shape and it's not a million degrees it should be fine. Most horses wouldn't be forward by the third, but I know plenty of people who have done it before.

He's an Arabian with way too much "forward" sometimes. We're thinking that by
the 3rd test he should be just about right;)
I haven't sent the entries in yet.....we could do the two tests on Saturday and
the 3rd on Sunday.

2 Training tests and a 1st? The horse would have to be pretty out of shape to find that too much.

it's not Dressage, XC, SJ. They should be able to do 3 dressage tests @ the low levels - are you kidding? Try conditioning if yours can't.

I seriously doubt 2 training level tests and 1 first level test will over-work the horse. Around here, schooling horse trials are done all in one day. So, horses do a dressage test, a cross country course and a stadium course all in one day. Never heard of a horse dying in one of these local events (the 4 stars are another story, of course.) So, I think 3 dressage tests in one day at low levels is very doable. It would be a different story if you were talking about 3rd or 4th level tests, perhaps.
Ha, ha - was typing while fatorangehorse posted. We had the same thought!

From USEF rulebook (DR119.2):
Horses may compete in no more than one Licensed Competition on the same day and are limited to a maximum of three Dressage rides per day at Fourth Level and below or two Dressage rides per day above Fourth Level. Horses competing in FEI Para-Equestrian tests are limited to a maximum of three Dressage rides per day including equivalent USEF or USDF tests. Horses may enter no more than two consecutive levels, Freestyle levels included, at any one competition (refer to the following chart).
You're good to go.
