I am purchasing a farm with a barn that has horse stalls with dirt floors. The current owner sometimes keeps his dogs in some of the stalls. I will only have two horses there, and there are a lot of extra stalls, so I will be able to initially use stalls that haven't contained dogs. However, one of the stalls he uses for the dogs is a huge run-in that he has closed off. I do want to use that for the horses at some point soon.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should use to sanitize the stall after I strip it? I don't want to put down mats unless I have to, as this will be a run-in stall. I want to leave the floor dirt. The barn is huge and the floor appears to drain well. It is on the top of a hill.

I appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts.

I guess the real question is why you're worried about sanitizing them? Most parasites and diesases are species specific, meaning his dogs cannot transmit anything they may have had to your horses. If your concern is for them transmitting something to your dogs, then I think time is going to be your best friend. Probably the simplest way to disinfect the stalls overall is by using a garden type sprayer with either a dillute bleach solution or a similar disinfectant marketed for horse premsies. Spray down the walls and let it soak into the dirt, it will kill most of anything living there. Really as long as your horses are healthy and vaccinated the chances of them picking something up that is of major concern is very slim.

Agree with the above.

If there's waste left on the floor, you could just scrape the top couple of inches off and replace it with gravel or stonedust.
