View Full Version : Suggestions for replacing Dansko Paddock Boots?

Sigh... I think it's finally time to start thinking about replacing my Dansko paddock boots. Since Dansko no longer makes these, I'm looking for suggestions.
My feet are really tricky to fit (I live in Danskos and sandals). I'm a size 9 to 9.5 depending on the style. I have extremely high arches, am very wide across the ball of the foot and have a narrow heel.
Typically Ariats do not work for me, although I'd be willing to try a specific style if someone thinks they'd fit.
I have the Mountain Horse winter boots, and would say they fit reasonably well, although I bought a pair of their sportive high riders years ago, and ended up re-selling them because they constantly slipped in the heel.
So, wise COTHers - any suggestions before I go boot shopping? I'm very flexible on price - with feet like mine I learned a long time ago not to skimp on shoes!

My favorites are the Grand Prix paddock boots. Good luck

I wish I had known they were going to stop making them. I have spent over $300 trying to replace them with something that fits as well, but no such luck. Ariat discontinued their Hanover boots, which is just as well, because they were poor imitations. I still have my last pair purchased in 2004, but eventually they shrink from getting wet and drying out.
I had some tall boots that slipped in the heel all the time. The boot guy at the tack store built up the heels on the inside with layers of suede, and that worked great.

Cavallo paddock boots with laces AND zippers AND elastic, leather covered gussets. Very comfy and very adjustable by changing the lacing configuration.
These guys were great to work with, shipped my boots and I received them within days and if they are anyhting like my dress boot Cavallo's they'll last forever.
Add to that, they didn't cost any more than soem of the Ariat's and are MUCH better quality.

I would recommend Blundstones. That is all I wore for about 4 years and they wear very well. They are pull ons. You can find them in Dover.

The Ariat Hanover are really similar--I have a pair. They fit similarly, but run a 1/2 size big (rounded toe). Ankle leather isn't as supportive as in my Danskos, but I bought the zip up kind both times (lazy!)--lace up might have been a better choice!

Check eBay, you may be able to find some stores getting rid of Dansko stock online. Otherwise, my foot conformation is similar, and I really like the Grand Prix's for a more formal boot. I also like the ariat boots that look like hiking boots (forget the name?). Those are super-comfy, but I only use to school/trail ride at home, not for lessons and such.
Just checked: if wearing slightly used boots doesn't skeeve you out:

Try the new Ariat Heritage II, I believe. They look just like the Hanovers did but they are less expensive. I bought a pair in May to wear with my new Treadstep suede half chaps and I absolutely love them. They seem to be holding up pretty well so far, and I wear them all the time...even to ride motorcycles. I'm probably going to buy another pair or two just to make sure I have some in case they're ever discontinued, too. I wasn't crazy about my last pair of Ariats, but I like this pair a lot.
ETA: Here we go. These are the ones I have.

My beef with the Hanovers are that they turn up at the toes. It's very uncomfortable on my bunion-y feet. They put so much pressure on the big toe joint that I only wore them a few times before giving up.
Aging: what an adventure.

I too live in Dansko shoes. I love their clogs and sandles. I stocked up on Danskos at my local Blue seal when I heard they would no longer making paddock boots. THey are my favorite.
However, I got a pair of Blundies at the urging of a friend and they are quite nice, so try a pair!
