View Full Version : RPSI vs OLD vs BWP. WTF?

With all due respect, what is the preference between these registries? I have an imported branded SF mare due in august to deliver a foal by Redwine. He is approved by these registries. Any big difference? Personal preference? Prettiest brand?

 I like the BWP brand the best. It's very symmetrical and still interesting. I have horses registered in all of these registries and I have had good experiences with all three. Check out the approvial sites and find the one that suits your needs.

I am not going to get into brand snobbery, but some things you might consider are the extent to which a particular registry supports its breeders, proximity of inspection sites, and the availability of programs that promote the development of sport horses. Because networking is an important aspect of effective marketing and provides opportunities to learn from fellow breeders, you might prefer a registry that is favored by breeders you know and admire, or whose programs you would like to emulate, as those are the people who will be attending the same inspections, conventions, etc. that you do (to the extent you choose to be an active member). Also, I would consider the long-term viability of the registry in this country, to the extent that can be evaluated, so as to avoid encountering a situation such as the disappearance of the US affiliate of the SF registry.
In addition, should you have plans to breed a Redwine filly or colt at some point, consider how the choice of registry might (or might not) impact the selection of a match for that horse. For example, if you have a filly and get her registered RPSI, would she have more or less stallion options available to her than she would if registered OLD-NA (assuming you would want papers for the resulting foal)?

I think it is just who you like to work with the best, which inspection is closest and maybe whether they have an awards program you might take advantage off. That last breeding example does not even matter as they all accept mares and stallions for breeding from each other.

Not necessarily Edgar, IE: The KWPN does not recognize RPSI or OLD Na as Erkend studbooks, so if you bred your RPSI registered mare to an approved KWPN stallion, I believe Reg. B is the only option for the foal.
(A good friend of mine just inquired about this. To further complicate, the mare herself is by a Foalbook KWPN stallion, o/o a TB mother, but registered RPSI. Same mare w/ GOV papers could have Reg. A foals)

I thought AHS too does not necessarily accept ISR/RPSI, etc. They have to approve the pedigree first.

If you read the OP you see that KWPN and AHS are not options, I am talking about the options for this subject. For the other registries it depends on the pedigree.
YankeeLawyer
Jul. 11, 2009, 10:51 AM
As I only have horses registered with AHS and KWPN, coincidentally, most of my experience is with these registries and that is why I raised the issue as I was not sure if the other registries have similar restrictions (and why I said "might (or might not) impact"). Also, a lot of people reading these boards may have a similar dilemma and not realize that their situation may be distinct in a material way from the OPs, and thus choice of registry would impact their future options.

Maybe I'm missing something, but Redwine isn't approved BWP. So that crosses off that option :)

In all seriousness, I think OldNA gives you more options than RPSI. But it also depends on how active a registry is in your area (both geographically and by the discipline of choice).

Not to go down the road of "huge fight about registries", but I'll put a vote in for RPSI. Since it is a German Verband, I think it will be accepted more than a non-European Registry. (by other European Verbands)
It has a pretty brand too ;)

First you need to wait and see which registry accepts the stallion that you have bred to.
Secondly BWP accepts Non-BWP stallions http://www.belgianwarmblood.com/bwp_NonBWP_stallions.html
Thirdly, American BWP approved stallions are fully accepted in Belgium and BWP is acceptable to other European Registries.
Fourth: BWP took all the SF horses into their registry when SF in the US ended
Lastly, BWP has some really good people who work hard, to make the registry worthwhile. We also have some lovely stallions and mares too!

I'm with NoDQhere............As far as I know, the only extra you may have is joining the new registry (other than the one you initially register her with) and having your mare approved where the stallion you choose is also approved (if she's not already approved in another registry)...if everything else is equal (inspection location proximity to your farm, etc) I believe all your above referenced registries papers are recognized by the others.
Although, I admit, it is cheaper in the long run to stick with one registry (for instance I am taking my two mares/foals to the RPSI in Tallahassee this month vs. the Oldenburg Verband in Ocala............because I'm happy with the registry, their people and service, but ALSO because it would have cost me to rejoin the Oldenburg Verband, get the mare approved in THEIR mare book (already paid to have this OLDENBURG mare approved in RPSI's for last year's foal)...plus drive there hours each way (gas and time expense) plus a motel cost and meals. In this economy I felt this was the right decision for me.

I'm getting my TB mare who is bred to Redwine for a 2010 foal, approved OLD as I feel for myself, with future breedings down the road, that gives me the best stallion selection for her, and I will also attempt to get her AHS approved as well to open up the options even further
Luckily she is down in PA and still fit and being ridden, so there are a lot of options for both of those registries, for her to go to ... :)
I am also looking at it "down the road as well". If the resultant foal is a colt and worthy enough to possibly be stallion material, which of the available registries are my best bet - marketability wise - for that colt? And IMO, OLD would give me the best bang for my buck ...

If you breeding for potential breed stock, then you need to go with a registry that is universal recongized. Reason is, you may foal a filly and the buyer may want to breed that filly eventually to stallion within, say the GOV or AHS, so you want a registry that the other registry will recongize. If your not breeding for breed stock, then its not an issue, go with whoever is easier for you.

Personally, I would worry more about who I was planning on breeding her too, and less who she was in foal too. Most of those registries don't care, and Redwine is approved in all of those you mentioned. However, if you wanted to breed to ie: Cunningham, you would want to make sure he was approved in that Registry. Then I would make sure the inspection tour comes close to my location. After that I don't think much else matters.

I vote for the following mare books:
WOW!
Pretty Nice
Okay (nothing to write home about)
Marginal (so-so)
Yuck (spay her)
Foals from WOW! and Pretty Nice mares are eligible for premium foal awards. The ones that actually are awarded premiums are branded with the Martini glass w/olive brand. Those that don’t make premium have a Martini glass brand with no olive.
Okay mares cannot have Premium foals but their foals can receive regular WTF registration papers. Their foals can be branded with the Wine glass brand.
Foals from Marginal and Yuck mares will get COPs and a beer mug brand (full mug for foals from Marginal mares, empty mug for foals from Yuck mares).
Fillies from Marginal and Yuck mares are only eligible for the Okay mare book at maturity.
Only colts from WOW! and Pretty Nice mares can be considered for stallion licensing.

But, but, my mares would be not eligible for points, much less extra points. All I have are boring, plain bays with non-fluffy tails and no white at all. Boring, boring. All of the dapples get sunbleached out by early summer. Now it's true that they both have four functional legs, and one is "cute", but, oh hell, WTF! I'll register them with WTF anyway, even if they only reach the Yuck book.
Does "cute" count?
Forgot. One has a very fluffy forelock. That's the cute one. Can she get extra points toward moving out of the Yuck book.
My suggestion for the brand is the raised middle finger that was suggested before. Or the wall with two circles and a long droopy "nose" hanging over it.

Hmmmm, I'll have to play around with brand designs - or anyone else can email me a picture of a suitable brand on a suitable butt (remember, that means on the butt of a horse with AT LEAST the mandatory 4 legs) - might be able to do the "Kilroy" brand (wall and droopy nose). I'll try to do a web update in the afternoon;)
And points - well, the Directors and Members need to start developing a point system. Cute should count for foal points! And remember, dapples count, as long as you can show documentation - a Spring picture is good enough for inshpection - well, I better check with the Inshpection Director on that :D I think she is, ahem, a bit tipsy right now...
