View Full Version : How Tack of the Day Finally Broke Me

I started subscribing to TOTD after hearing about it on this board. For ONE YEAR I would open the emails, sometimes drool, sometimes consider how I might someday need six pairs of spare gloves or a bling browband... but I never broke down.
Until today.
Grand Prix paddocks are my downfall. I've owned two pairs in my entire lifetime (25 years of riding). They are amazing. I paid $200 for my current pair, which are black.
So this aft, perusing my Yahoo mail while at work (naughty), I see the very GP boots that I love so much. In brown. For $83.
Things go a bit dim after that, but the next email I received was a receipt for my purchase.
TOTD, you are a worthy adversary to my attempt at frugality.

How do they run size wise in comparison to Ariats, Danskos, or Sergios? I've always wanted a pair and my Ariats are about to crumble.

OMG, that IS frugality! THey will last you years! I tried so hard to justify buying a pair, but just couldn't (if they'd had the front tie/rear zips in my size I might have been able to!)

Hah, I was so tempted to get a pair. My Ariats are still doing fine but they're looking rough I reeeally like the looks of the ones that zip up the back.

Over the years, I bought a number of items from TOTD - until the time I ordered a helmet and it came in the retail display box, just taped shut!
Needless to say, the box was in sad shape - including a bump in the center of the top where it had been pressed down around the crown of the helmet.
Despite numerous e-mails (with photos of the mashed box), the only response I ever rec'd from TOTD was "we'll have to check with the manufacturer" (about replacing it).
No more TOTD for me, thankyouverymuch.

I wanted those boots, too, and the kerrits sit tight breeches they had on recently, too. But I've managed to resist so far.

TOTD revealed themselves to me a looooong time ago. I think it's been about eighteen months to two years since the last time I bought something from them. Not a fan, anymore.

I had the same thing with my GPA. Taped box. Yuck.
I had good luck when I had things shipped to the L48, because they don't actually ship to Alaska nor do they accept credit cards with billing addresses to Alaska.
However, the stuff eventually arrives and is good, so except for the helmet purchase I've been pretty happy.

Grand Prix paddocks are narrow, my friends.
See, that guy over there... he's the drug dealer for this block.
Just trying to help.

I don't understand. what's so bad about a helmet box being taped shut.

I think they were saying that the helmet box was not shipped INSIDE another protective box...just taped shut and mailed like that......

Exactly.
That decorative box that you see on the shelf in the store... THAT's what they shipped it in.

*NOT* protective enough for shipping.

That's music to my ears! I'll be looking for them on TOTD.

I have bought several TOTD items. Some I've sold on Ebay as they just didn't fit. Recently I ordered the Lende half-chaps from TOTD. Their web page stated that the Lendes run small, about an inch in each direction so I measured my leg and added an inch. The half chaps arrived and were too big by about an inch in each direction. I sent an email to complain but assumed TOTD wouldn't take the half chaps back. TOTD pointed out that I was the only person who complained but they did exchange them for the smaller size. I was surprised and impressed.

Narrow, and don't be going and having a high instep either if you want the zip-up only puppies.

My YOTD Lende half chaps were big too but I will wear them over jeans and with thick socks come winter. I have another pair I like better, the Tredwells from Bit O'Britain, that fit just perfectly over breeches.

I lovelovelove my old GP paddock boots but they are starting to show thier age (10 years or so). I have been eyeing the Del Gardas and guess I'll have to go buy them now....
I check TOTD fairly often, but not faithfully, and I have never bought from them. Most of the time their deals on things I would want aren't really deals.

so besides being narrow, do they run comparable to Ariats? I really would like a pair but hate to order a couple pairs just to make sure I get the right size.....

The Grand Prix paddock boots will be available all weekend. I have no clue what sizes are left but I do know if it is posted on Friday you can order all the way up until Monday morning at about 10:45AM.

I've ordered several things from TOTD and except for shipping being slow, have been well satisfied with everything I've received. All items were exactly as advertised.

Me, too. Including the Troxel I just received. It was packed properly in a shipping box.
I do wish they could ship faster, though.

I've ordered several things from TOTD also, and no problems at all. I've never tried to return something, though.

I don't get their emails anymore. A lot of the time it's not really a deal. Plus, I've had a really bad experience with their "customer service"... rude, will not admit to making a mistake. I'm all set. Also all set with all companies they are affiliated with. BoB, HorseFroogle, TOTD ... won't be getting any of my money... TYVM.

Errr... are they discontinuing Grand Prix paddocks or something? I got a great deal from Equus Now on them as well a while back....
UGH. Off to stock up on paddock boots.

OP chiming in...
Yes, the GPs are a little more narrow and definitely more tapered than Ariats, but maybe that's why I find them so comfortable. I don't care for the big square toe box on a lot of the Ariats and the old Danskos.
I have a pair of Ariat winter paddocks, and I love them. The GPs fit very similar except for the narrower toe.
I'm not anticipating an issue, as I'm ALWAYS an 8.5 and I have the same boot in black. I'll let you all know when they arrive. This will be my maiden voyage into TOTD territory.
Maybe part of me want this to turn out badly... could save me money down the road...:)

My boots arrived yesterday, and they're gorgeous!
BUT... A few of you complained about TOTD's packaging, and WOW. They obviously pulled the boots, in their original box, off the shelf and slapped them into a plastic UPS shipping bag with no cushion for the box. The box is destroyed, but the boots are fine.
Safe to say I wouldn't buy a helmet from them. :)

Everything I have ordered has been delivered and as promised, no bad experiences, but somethings have been really slooow.
I got 2 pair of Irideon tights a couple months ago and they are my new favorite riding apparel by a mile. Wow they are comfy and reasonably flattering and cool enough for July in Maryland.
But thanks for the warning re: helmet shipping practices. Won't be ordering a helmet from them.
And if it weren't for the big square toe box on Ariats, I don't know what I'd do, because I have big square feet. Riding footwear and clothing seems to mostly be made on the planet of long narrow people, which I am so not.
Also, my lende half chaps from TOTD ran big too, so big I needed to have the straps on the bottom cut down and restitched. I can't imagine who thinks they run small. ???

I had to chime in, TOTD has my number and I am a slave to their emails. Never had an issue with customer service, but on the other hand, never had to do any returns nor have I ordered any helmets. The tall boots I ordered came packaged safe and sound. Must be an item by item issue.
