Our little 13 day old pure Cleveland Bay colt had developed the beginning of an umbilical abscess. We took him to the vet this morning and did an ultrasound. Luckily it has not reached the bladder, urethra or main arteries. Just a pocket next to the stump. Surgery tomorrow to remove the infection. He could use some jingles!

I had a filly have surgery three years ago........the infection had followed the cord towards her liver....but not quite there yet.
The surgery went fine, she recovered wonderfully, and we've now just started her under saddle. She may just be the nicest mover/mare I've ever bred!!!
Good luck..........hope your story turns out as good as I was fortunate to have!!

Well I was at a show today but surgery was at 8:30 and he was out around 2 1/2 hours later. Recover was hard for him and he needed fluids. It ended up much worse the the ultrasound showed. They took his cord as he had liver problems on the bloodwork and part of his bladder was affected.
He doesn't foresee any side effects. Intrepid should be fine. Pick up is tomorrow or Monday if he isn't bouncing back. But he was up and nursing. A good sign! :) And no news since so that is always good news! Thanks for all the jingles. This is all new to me. Never even had the slightest discharge or hernia is 50 mares.

Good news on your colt! Let's focus our good wishes on Cataluna's fill, too. I'm doing a 'happy outcomes' jingle for both.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like kinda good news, more extensive than you thought, but he is OK. Jingling here at Sugarbrook for your colt.

Vet called this morning and I'm leaving to pick him up in a half hour. I guess he was running laps around mom trying to get away from the vet! LOL. So he said, he seems to be feeling rather well. I'll be a nervous nellie for a few days. Yes jingles for Catalina's filly now! Please keep us updated. I'm wondering if the "day" they waited for surgery is the reason the infection spread further then he thought. All is well that ends well though.

What are the signs of an umbilical abscess?
I can only tell you what I saw. For me it was fine one day and the next the umbilical was open and a little pus oozing out. Not a lot. Temperature on the foal was fine. I decided to get it ultrasounded.
By the ultrasound it showed a pocket of puss but not much more damage. However going in. The umbilical vein going to the liver was affected (and removed) and part of the bladder was also. The vet explained there are two main arteries, the umbilical vein and the urethra that all channel in the same "hallway". SO there are lots of options for the foal to get sick. Intrepid's blood work was almost normal. Which puzzled the vet, but he said its because we caught it so quickly.
He is home. Looking good. He is on Naxel twice a day for 10 days and the tube is removed in two days. Stitches out in 14. He looks good that is for sure, so does mom. Gotta love mom!

Also good news for my girl! Went in for the initial surgery evaluation upon arrival, only to find that the antibiotics seemed to have done the trick. Did more ultrasounds, and everything was super clean. Her blood work was also fabulously normal which meant no surgery, and she got to come home a few hours later! :)
The first signs I got of the abscess was a lot of swelling that appeared overnight, and she presented a temperature of 102.2. The area was also (understandably) quite sore to touch. Her personality/demeanor never changed.. unless you looked at the thermometer or got down to look at her navel, you would have never known anything was wrong.

Jingling for the two foals earlier posted, and looking for jingles of our own too... My filly had surgery this morning, vet didn't call to give us an update today :( Called the clinic and she is up and okay, but I don't have any details of how the surgery went....
