View Full Version : Anyone thinking of what stallions to use for their 2010 season yet?

I am, now that foaling and all that is settled for the year.

I've decided *tentatively* (as things can change as a different stallion catches my attention)... although I'm pretty convinced these particular match-ups will produce some very exceptional foals:

Elana (Waldekonig x Pacific Sunset) to the stallion Rubignon (Rubinstein x Donnerhall).

Pacific Beauty to the stallion The Baron Van Gogh (Burgraaf/Cor de la Byere/Ladykiller x Ramzes).

Royal Dawn (Rubinstein x Airport) mare to the stallion Wolkenglanz (Wolkenstein2/Weltmeyer x Wendekreis/Bolero)

Tess (approved TB) mare to the stallion Bratt Z (Balouet du Rouet x Capitol)

I'm also looking for a very special mare to cover with Briar 899.

Fingers crossed for an exciting year!

Oh man, you know it's an addiction when... lol.

I have been thinking of stallions I want to use, but then we haven't even got everyone settled for this year yet so I should probably just worry about the here and now!

Some of the stallions that are on the short list are:
Gribaldi (Forte and I are going to experiment together on this one I am guessing as nobody seems to know of any frozen foals from him).
Contendro
Benidetto (if we don't use him next cycle)
Dancier

Rodawn, that is neat you have a Waldkoenig mare too! Is she HUGE? Ours just had a nice Quaterback foal this year, I really couldn't be more pleased.

Is there a Baron Van Gogh aside from Edgar's? If you are looking him, he's Burggraaf/Viola/Rigoletto :) I had a lovely filly by him in 08.

Yes, have already purchased a breeding for 2010 -

My new Saddlebred mare will go to Balta'Czar, the sire of my 2008 colt. Considering that colt's dam wasn't nearly as nice as my new one, and that my boy still placed 1st or 2nd in every one of his HB classes last year, I'm expecting a real show-stopper from this cross!!
VERY excited!!

I'm tossing around ideas, they include:

Dacaprio
Rubignon
Redwine
Fabuleux
Pablo
Rousseau
Rosenthal

It's down to

Rosenthal
or
Rubignon

It's tough though... I have seen many Rosenthal/Arabian crosses that are exquisite... and I know he has been offered in the Arabian Sport Horse Payback program at 1/2 his reg stud fee (and may be again)... but I can't help but visit Rubignon's web page on a daily basis... just wish the same offers were available for him.

Right now we are for sure breeding two- possibly 4. The two for sure ones are
Greta ( Gaspari x Capitol I) and Machtelt ( Glennridge x Makelaar).

I will have my Hanoverian mare bred to Sir Wanabi for a third time. Thus far I got fillies, both dark brown/black. The first one only had a star, no other markings. This year my mare gave birth to a flashy filly that looks like a small version of her sire, with socks on all four!

I have a 5 year old Rubignon mare that is SUPER, great brain, super show horse, and very good mover. Would highly recommend him! Oh, and she's out of a Weltmeyer mare if that helps. Super combo, super horse.

I'm in the same position as Donella. Mare isn't even confirmed in foal for this year, and I'm already thinking ahead to 2010. Forte (Freestyle/Wolkenstein II/Arkansas) was just bred to Belissimo M for the 2nd time and will be presented to GOV for breeding approval next month. If she doesn't catch this time I'm going to call it quits for the year and try fresh next year. If she does catch, then I'll probably do frozen again next year. I also have a new mare Eirianna (Easter Ruler/Vaultair/Widukind), who I am playing around with the idea of breeding. I bought her as a riding horse, but she sure is nice . . . might be worth experimenting with breeding her once. So here's what I'm thinking for my girls for 2010:

Forte (trying to breed a serious FEI prospect)- fresh chilled option-Le Primeur or ???; frozen: Gribaldi, Blu Hors Romanov, Don Romantic, Don Schufro, perhaps Belissimo again?

Eirianna (aiming for a an all rounder foal): Le Primeur, Fuerst Grandios, Clinton, Rotspon, Rascalino

Forte, wow,we REALLY have similiar taste
If Lotte (Longchamp) doesn't catch frozen this go around, I am really thinking of Le Primeur for her as well. I just really love that horse everytime I see him. I wonder if a more amazing canter even exists? I really wanna see what he will do with a real dressage bred/type mare!

I was seriously debating Don Romantic for her for this year, he was definately at the top of the list but when it really came down to it, I wanted to try a non D stallion on her (shes had three Don Freds).

I won't be breeding this year, but as soon as my 2009 Halifax colt hit the ground, I knew I was hooked!

My short list for my 2001 black bay German Riding Pony (Weser-Ems) mare (*IF* I breed in 2010) includes:
Hilken's Black Delight (Branduardi M x Syrah x Morbidelli)
Lateran (Lukas x Nenci x Nordcap)
Voyager (Vivaldi x Nirvana x Night Power)

I also have my eye on a lovely 2002 chestnut 14.3+hh Dutch x Arab mare a friend of mine will likely be selling next year (she's thrown some beautiful Swedish WB foals and was used as a surrogate for a full Swedish WB colt this year). I would love to breed this mare to Halifax (Hasko x Steehorst Love-Bird x Bronllwyn Cha-Cha), since I got such a nice foal by him out of my other mare, and I still have 1 1/2 doses of semen left! :p
I also really like Casino Royale K (FS Champion de Luxe x Raffaela K x Top Nonstop) - could get a palomino with this guy!! :D

Why are foals like potato chips?!?!? ;)

Oh fun! I love this game!

Breedings for 2009 are:
Cobra One x Dricah (Drosselklang II/Matrose/Wienerwald) an international GP mare formerly ridden by Rene Tebbel and Cobra is a fav of mine. Loads of scope, incredibly elastic gaits, and a drool worthy pedigree...plus he has fun chrome and the best personality, just gorgeous (Capetown S <Caletto I x Lagano>/Carano <Capitol I x Corde>)

Cobra One x Philosophie (Cottage Boy/Strike Gold/Bupers) a beautiful typey mare screams Holsteiner, leggy, short coupled, long neck, and a face to die for...a personality to match it all plus a line breed on Corporal and Korenbleem xx. She also has Sicambre xx (sire of Sacremento Song xx) in her 5th gen

Quidam Junior x Dorina H (Alexis Z/Diskus/Gotthard) former A/O jumper lots of scope, large framed, long-lined mare. Quidam Junior is (Quidam dR and o/o Narcotique) Narcotique had only international level GP horses.

Ideas for 2010...

Dricah (Drosselklang II/Matrose/Wienerwald): Asti Spumante, Torino, Quidam Blue

Philosophie (Cottage Boy/Srike Gold/Bupers): Askari, Torino, Silver Twist, Chacco Blue

JennPenn (Raja Baba/Raise a Native/Tudor Minstrel/Fleet Nasrullah/Tom Rolfe): Carlow Clover or Clover Cliste (Clover Hill stallions)

Dorina H (Alexis Z/Diskus/Gotthard): Quicksilber, Quilot Z, Conquest

Rhiannon (Marcus/Vice Regent xx): Mezcalero, Elio, Cobra One, Balta'Czar

more I've thought about but cannot think of at the moment...:) Always subject to much change!!!

He stood with Marieke Forrestal-Jonkman here in the US as Van Gogh B before he went to Edgar. He did his 30-day test in 2005. I have heard very nice things about him.

PS: Edgar and Susan just picked him up this spring. Did you get your semen from Europe for this filly? I'd love to see a photo of your filly - I think there are exceptional things to come by for this young stallion.

No worries! You're shortened pedigree summary was a bit confusing, that's all.

The accepted form of listing lineage is either -

sire x dam v dam's sire Burggraaf x Viola v Rigoletto

or

sire / dam's sire / second dam's sire Burggraaf / Rigoletto / Albatros

Rigoletto is very well known and respected, so he deserves mention. Regardless as to if the stallions are well known or not, the rule of thumb is to not skip generations to a more known stallion when listing lineage but rather list them as they are recorded. Hope that helps!

Hence when I list the pedigree short form as: (Burgraaf/Cor de la Byere/Ladykiller x Ramzes). I stating strictly the stallions in the pedigree. Ramzes is more widely known that Rigoletto is.

I guess I stated the lineage a different way from the norm??? I just kinda thought everyone would know those particular stallion names, is all.

OK - I'll jump in:
Benidetto to my Espri / Woermann mare
Not sure about all the other girls'dates, but short-list includes Romanov, Quaterback, Wolkentanz II, Wolkenglanz, Diamond Hit, maybe Riccione or Rhodes Scholar, and one of the F-line - depending on semen availability.
If anyone is looking, I have extra Hotline and San Rubin and Riccione frozen ...

I am somewhat on the fence for next year....

I will breed Emerald Fire (Oskar II *Pg*/Diplomat Way/Bagatell) to Tatendrang (Onassis *E*/Avignon II/Ricardo) for her first foal.

Pennant's Valentine (Pennant/Medaille d'Or/Secretariat) will also go to Tatendrang

Lovely Lady (Tzian/Donauwind/Karat) will probaby go back to Tatendrang. I may try a different stallion with her - she is getting older and I may want to outcross her.

Tanzania *E* (Avignon II/Ricardo/Prince Conde) this is Tate's mom and I am not completly sold that she will be bred one more time. If I do breed her again I'm leaning toward Grafenstoltz (Polarian/Camelot) and would be for an ET.

Ooh Ann Kitchel...I have a yearling filly by L'andiamo. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person...super super sweet horse. My filly has not only inherited his dashing good looks, but he seems to pass along his disposition as well...I know others with foals by him who say the same thing. If you'd like to see pics of her I'd be happy to post :-D

Madoy you are feeding my insanity! I am in the process of buying a Weltmeyer mare and Rubignon is on my very short list of who I am considering breeding her to in 2010. Hopefully it all works out and I get something as nice as you!

It really is insane to think about 2010 breedings already, but I confess to sharing that insanity.:D It wouldn't be any fun to finalize things before the year is out; after all, what would I do when the days become shorter and darker? However, I'm pondering Belissimo M, Wolkentanz II fresh, Dauphin, Dacaprio fresh, and Fidertanz. I have a mare in foal to Hotline, and I may add him to the list depending on what the foal looks like.

We are taking this year off for a number of reasons, time, space, heartbreak, finances, economy, sick parents etc. Since we won't have any foals in the spring, it is my hope to start breeding again early.

this is my possible lineup:

EM Amelia. Amarillo(Absatz)/Bolero

Reel Proper xx

Kurtaxe. Lordanos/Landor S/Zeus

Contessa. Contendro/Voltaire/Wellington

I have a Silvercreek farm breeding from the loss of my beautiful Nina, so I may breed Nina's daughter Contessa to Landwerder.

I have a dose of Contendro in the tank (it was for Nina) but don't really want to try it on a maiden......

Everything else is up in the air!.............and suggestions are appreciated! I LUV LUV LUV my Soprano foal from this year, but with the fear that his 168# delivery will be repeated, I am looking for a slightly smaller stallion!

Nope. Marieke (Boreashorses.com) imported him as a 2 yr old so he's been in the states for awhile. He used to be called Van Gogh B prior to Edgar's acquiring him. :) I put him to a Final Pool xx mare. The filly must of been a lab in a past life as she was the friendliest thing from day one. She's slated to go to the BWP inspections this year and I'll try and get some new photos . Yearling photos just aren't the most attractive :-) If you PM me I can email you photos from when she was a weanling.

Hey Donella,
Great minds think alike! I have to say I am getting pretty scared off of Gribaldi based on what's been said on the other thread. If I'm going to do a "gamble" stallion, I think I'd rather do Don Schufro. At least I know he does have SOME foals from frozen on the ground. Plus I have no "D" line in my program and I'd sure love to have a Don Shufro filly for future breeding.
I'm surprised you haven't considered Wolkentanz II? Unfortunately Forte already has Weltmeyer pretty close up in her pedigree, so not an option for me. Of course Weltmeyer is one of those stallions that you either really love or really don't. ( I do!)
I am really interested in Le Primeur. Do you think he would be a good choice for Eiri? She needs a shorter back, stronger topline and a more uphill build. She is quite athletic, moves with a lot knee and jumps well, but I think her weakness is really in her back/loin connection. Also, she is a hot little tamale, so want to breed her to a more mellow stallion.
I'm thinking of going out to Calgary at the end of the summer to go see Le Primeur in person. Wanna come? Maybe I could convince Dressage (Pea) Nut to come too. She's also a new breeding addict and loves a good road trip : )

We are going to breed two of our mares next year to our stallion Equinox (standing at Jump Start Farm).

We are not sure yet who else we will breed or to whom we will breed them. We are still trying to get one of these two breed this year but life seems to be making things difficult including Fedex losing the semen in Tennessee airport. The 4th mare, Gaea (by Torino out of a Saluut Mare) is only 3 years old and we are not sure exactly what she is going to do yet.

We are sad to not be able to breed Charite (aka Mercy) anymore (by Saluut out of a cartoonist mare). She is just getting too old now... Otherwise she would have had a date with Equinox too!

Yup. How many depends on the economy and what sells here first though. I have untested frozen that was given to me for my deceased stallion's sire, frozen for Florett and my own colt that will be 3 and test breed a couple mares. My colt is a max white sabino overo Paint (and given his dam's looks possibly splash as well) that is 3/4 TB and 1/4 "stock" horse bred.
One TB mare would go to the colt and one to Florett in all likelihood. I don't think I have the right mare for the other frozen semen at this time.

If I can talk DH into it, probably Cunningham and Redwine. I sold one mare last year so am down to two. I thought I'd retired them, but want foals by these two stallions. I might be better off just looking to buy youngsters by these stallions, providing people will sell them. I'm tossing it back and forth. The mare I sold last fall will go to Cunningham after she foals in May.

With 6 foals coming in 2010 (fingers crossed!), I think I'm only going to breed a few mares next year.

Rio's Best Kept Secret (Rio Grande x Arrak) will go to Breemeersen's Adorado (Acorado x Glucksgriff x Arkansas) or Valentino Z (Darco x Feo x Iveday)

Tropica (Come Back II x Astaire) will probably go to Coronado WW (Orlando x Kannan x Sandro) unless I am able to get an ET from my Darn that Alarm mare, or I may put her to Deja Blue B (Ferro x Branco x French Jab).

I am undecided about the other girls, but want to find the perfect mare for Cielo B (Simsalabim x Jus de Pomme x Ahorn)!

Forte,

I have thought of Wolkentanz though I am not entirely sure on W temperament with Lotte. I need something a little more laid back and I know Le Primeur is (not to say Wolkentanz isn't..I really don't know). I like the idea of more Absatz in the mix though with Wolkentanz. I guess we'll see if she is preg or not on Tuesday.

I am not sure if I would put Le Primeur with a mare who's type you want to alter. He does not have a high type index and I am not sure if that is because most of the mares he got were jumper mares ...but at the end of the day, I think the mares type/looks will come through. I like your mares type, but if you want to shorten back and add a more uphill frame, I think there are better stallions for that. Wolkentanz would do that. I do think LP realiable passes on performance ability because his index's are good for that...so it just depends on what you are looking for.

It would be great if you came down to see him. You should try for early september and catch the Hano inspection at Spruce (we will be there with the foals if all goes as planned and maybe Donella as well), as it is always on a few days prior to the masters, so its a good all in one. LP was competing in some of the classes there last year as well. Albert and the breeding manager there are really good about showing off the stallions really well if you phone in advance and ask to see them. Would be a fun, horsey filled week/weekend forsure!

geez.. you guys are only on 2010??? (kidding)..
Will try to use the Rubels semen I have stored.. I have a very tall leggy mare that should cross well with him.
Will dive into the world of ET and use Belissimo M and try again with Londonderry with the same donor mare. 90% sure to give Silvermoon a try on my AA and try again with Lord Sinclair. Still dont know about the new mare yet.. still waiting to see how she does this breeding. My daughter really wants to use Soliman de Hus who is at Celle now. And, of course, this is all if the goddess of Frozen Semen decides to smile upon my little farm.. otherwise the wild hunt for fresh will begin.
