Hi Guys~

I am in need of a good vet to conduct a PPE in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Anyone have a name or a reccomendation? Contact info would be appreciated if you have it. Feel free to PM names to avoid if necessary. :)

Also, any good places to stay, eat, or visit there? Please post or send me a PM!

Thanks!

Sorry - no vet recommendations but I can recommend some places to eat, etc.

Variety of hotels in Halifax, all fairly centrally located (and Halifax is small so none are too far from anything) - The Courtyard Marriott is good and is right beside the market that happens on Saturdays. Westin Nova Scotian is also nice. Lots of people stay at the Lord Nelson because it's centrally located, right at the end of the main drag which is Spring Garden.

Some nice restaurants for dinner - Press Gang and Seven.
Vegetarian / vegan organic place called Heartwood is delish
For brunch, try Janes on the common. Go early or you may hvae to wait in line a bit.

For close trips, try Peggy's Cove and Chester.

Halifax is a fun place to visit - even more so when one is buying a horse, I would imagine!

Stayed in Peggy's Cove in '07 and loved it. Also loved Chester or rather Chestah. Some fabulous places to eat. Rhubarb Cafe outside Peggy's Cove has wonderful food.

PM'd about vets...

As for places to stay/eat/visit, when are you going to be here? There are tons of cool places that are a day trip or an afternoon, Peggy's Cove as mentioned, Hall's Harbour, the Halifax Waterfront, Point Pleasant Park, Ross Farm Museum, and many more. There are also quite a few things going on downtown this summer - the Jazz Festival starts tomorrow and runs til the 18th, the Tall Ships Festival is July 16th-29th, and the International Busker Festival is August 6th-16th. I'd recommend the Delta, Lord Nelson, Westin, Courtyard Marriott or Cambridge Suites to stay.

As for restaurants, it depends on what you're looking for. My favourites (right now) are The Five Fishermen, Chives, Bear, Fid, or Stonehaven. If you like sushi, Hamachi House is to die for. If you're looking for a place to go for some snacks and a drink, the Economy Shoeshop, Maxwell's Plum, Henry House, Elephant and Castle, or The Old Triangle are all nice spots. If it's nice, sit out on the patio at the Shoe Shop, Your Father's Mustache, or the Argyle.

Too much information yet?

I first just have to say I laughed at your title of the post...a) Canadian - we may not be as big as the US but we are a pretty big country so might need a little more specific (which thankfully you were in the post) :) and b) People - Who else would be looking at this website....Sorry just had to laugh.

I am not sure if you are directly in Halifax or in and around Halifax, but I use a vet out of the avon animal hospital and all the vets there I would HIGHLY recommend - http://annapolisvalleyhunt.org/AvonOpeningPage.htm They are located in Windsor which is about 1/2 hour outside of Halifax so not sure where they will travel to but if you contact the number on the website they should be able to let you know if they can do it, or perhaps recommend a vet that will.

This may sound strange as not sure the price range of the horse you are looking at but a couple of the horses that have been sold out of the barn I am at (at higher end prices) have actually been trailered to PEI (vet college) for their PPE and then when they passed were dropped off at their new barn on the way back (just outside of Halifax)...with trailering costs/bridge costs/vet costs I don't know how much it was but thought I would throw it out there. I think the reasoning was that the college gives you instant results on a more wide range tests, but don't think it would be common to use the college on the average horse.

As for places to stay anything down town is nice, the Westin is where I personally like to stay as it is newly renovated, reasonably priced and can walk to down town shops (but is not in the middle is ~ 10min walk to the more touristy spots)...but the Westin also has a "yuk yuks" comedy club and I really enjoy taking in a show if I am in the city.

Good luck and have a fun visit!

See? That is why I don't live on either coast! Everyone loves to hate Ontario and Quebec but I bet we get more sunshine than both coasts combined!! It is awful pretty out there though :)

I board at the same barn as Jolie and I also really like all the vets that work out of the avon hospital.

I appreciate all of the reponses and the PMs! It will be my first time in Canada, so I am looking forward it it. No sun sounds great to me right now, as today we have another day that is going to hit 104, and have already had almost 20 days at 100+ this year!

I will probably be there the early part of August for a long weekend, and am very excited about buying my first horse as an adult that has come back to riding!
