What does it mean when you look up a horse, and next to the owner's name it says "sold?" Has it been sold to a non-USEF member? Is USEF just waiting for the paperwork?

Thanks for any information.

It means, that I, as the owner, when I did my renewal for my horses and my membership, informed USEF that I sold the horse. I do not have to provide them any information whatsoever on who I sold it to.

Interestingly, I marked a horse as retired a few years ago and they completely removed her show record. I thought that was a strange thing to do. Doesn't help a whole lot for breeders or trying to track particular bloodline performance records.

If you marked them as retired, they are no longer allowed to show, that is why they removed them from the database.

The sold, is correct if and if you try to show a horse that has that after their name, the show will most likely tell you that you need to get the transfer paperwork done with USEF. Even if you don't get the transfer done, you can earn no "good" points with a horse that has sold in the owner's field.

I think it's a strange practice. What purpose does it serve to do that?

Nominally, at least, it prevents the horse from being "unretired" under the same name and USEF number.

I agree that it's very odd to remove the horse's show record. Surely it wouldn't be so difficult to leave the record up.

I too marked my mare as "retired," since she is now a broodmare. But I certainly didn't expect them to remove her record entirely, and would not have made that designation had I known that's what they would do.

As tidy rabbit said -- and as all breeders would agree -- that can just screw a breeder who needs to be able to prove the mare's or stallion's show record.

I can understand not wanting a horse to be "unretired" without going through some kind of process, but they should keep the horse's record and add a "retired" designation to it.

I'm going to speak to someone at USEF about it.

When I called about it they just re-activated her so I could access the records for insurance purposes. It would be great if they changed this.

I thought the only time you could no longer show a "retired" horse was if you had a formal retirement ceremony at a recognized event. For example, Custom Made can no longer be shown as he was formally retired at Rolex.

Thanks for this thread !! Answered a question I had. I have a broodmare who had a very nice show record but got hurt so I now have her as a broodmare -- I had looked up her show record (neglected to print it out). She was still listed under the previous owner at the time (I got her because she was retired from showing). I went back some time later to print it out and could not find her listed anymore. Thought I was going crazy
