I hadn't seen this posted but thought I'd go ahead and mention it:

Gemwood Horse Trials has extended their closing date to July 10th according to their website (www.gemwoodevents.com)

TLE, Will you post here if it does change to a one day format? It would be appreciated.

Thanks

Absolutely! I hope not -- both for Laura's sake (since although a change like that would allow her not to LOSE $$, last time she did it USEF *CHARGED* her a change fee) and for mine as the announcer trying to keep track of 3 phases at once. ;-)

Will post back what I hear regardless.

Do they have to rent tents for stabling? I was just wondering why they charge so much for only two nights of stabling?

Renting stabling tents is VERY expensive, by all accounts. And they only have permanent stalls for a handful of horses at Twin Towers.

I really wish I could go, it's gotten to be a favorite show of mine. Next year!

DW,

Thanks for letting me know. I didn't realize that they were under tents. I guess that I have become too spoiled by the KHP.

Ohh noo. please don't tell me that they extended the closing date....
I <3 Gemwood and Greater Dayton. Such fun horse trials.

I can't afford to go, and I told myself that if they extended the closing date that maybe i would try and enter....
But. I just can't..

Auburn, as DW said, most of the stabling at Gemwood is in tents... which means hefty rental of both stalls and tents (2 different companies). Laura has been wrestling with the stabling cost issue since she took over the events -- previous organizer used what few stalls were on grounds and then for a while at least was offering permanent stalls at the county fairgrounds -- a good 20 miles away!! It will ALWAYS be cheaper to actually run an event where there are permanent facilities because you can charge less but for a longer period of time (kind of amortizing the expense of building). I know one land owner/former organizer who used to say that it was the stabling that made the $$... but only if you don't have to pay for it yourself. And it's VERY true. The alternative is to raise the entry fee... but then those who don't stable end up paying for the stalls anyway (in a round about way).

Anyway...not lecturing... just throwing out some thoughts.

I am not a fan of temp stabling, but it's worth paying and using to keep the stabling on the grounds and keep another show in area 8.

I do hope Laura gets more entries with the extention - she does a really nice job of organizing GD and GW, so I hate to see it not get supported.

However, as I type that, I unfortunately missed GD due to lameness issues, and aside - I have had to cut back on the shows this year just based on lack of extra funds due to vet bills, and just in general finances, so cannot make it to GW this year:-(

TLE,

I appreciate your thoughts on the cost of renting a tent to provide stabling. Now, I wish that I had not committed to be somewhere else and made the effort to go to Gemwood. I will definitely keep it in mind for next year. Thank you again for taking the time to explain it to me.

Maybe someone should write an "Eventing for Dummies" book? I could use a copy.

Just a quick note. Had an email from Laura last night that said Gemwood is remaining a 2-day event.... dressage and SJ on Saturday... XC for all divisions on Sunday.

she's also looking for volunteers. If anyone can help out, please drop her an email at HorsSports@aol.com or check out GemwoodEvents.com
