View Full Version : Oh Dear, Dreading the Winter Already

It's only July and I am already dreading the harsh Canadian winters!
I have been dreaming of becoming and snow bird and taking my little mare south for the winter, however with a lower budget and being under the age of 18, as well as the lack of knowledge of the US in general, definitely doesn't make planning to go south a simple task!
Therefore, I was wondering if my fellow COTHers could recommend a decent, cheap, baby horse friendly place to board/rent/or get a working student position. I am willing to work/ride for board, of course. And I don't require a full training facility, just something suitable for competing in the lower levels with a greenie.
It doesn't matter the location, preferably Aiken, South Carolina, but I am open to Georgia and Florida as well.
My future sanity (thanks to snow) depends on you! Anyone who has ever been in Canada in January can understand my pain...
I'd be willing to bet I left out some vital information...but nonetheless, thanks!

I don`t want to unduly alarm anyone, but today I saw a yellow leaf lying on my jumping arena in Strafford, Vt.
This is clearly NOT a good sign.

Here in Camden, SC the spiders ususally spin their big webs beginning late August into September - they have already started.

Well, the wooly caterpillars are everywhere here - does seem a bit early but not ready to accept it as a sign....
What does the Farmer's Almanac have to say? Tends to be the most accurate seer of things to come....

Well, here in good ol' Covington, GA, summer still is hot as 40 hells and I am happy to know winter is coming...I can always put on more sweaters and jackets, but there are only so many clothes you can take off in the sweltering, humid heat...particularly at 59  !

I'm just 45 minutes north of you and they started over a week ago. I had a whole conversation whining about this because I thought it was due to the fact that I de-cobwebbed the whole barn two weeks ago.
I'm not the only one then?? Oh no!

Oh NOOOOOOO!!!!!
But maybe it's just the gazillion inches of rain we've had ???!

Lots of rain will cause the trees to turn pre-maturely I think... although I could be wrong. I have been once before ;)
It's like winter here. I swear it was snowing when I looked out the window yesterday. It hasn't reached above 15 degrees in forever and rain like crazy. It did snow at the beginning of June here too....
Crazy weather... Not looking forward to winter here either. I have no indoor at my new barn! :(

To the OP, several riders from further north (including in Canada) also go south for the winter, so it is definitely worth checking with people local to you who may know you or your trainer and would appreciate the extra help during the winter show season. You might also check with trainers on the USEA area IIII website:

I can sympathize with you. Here in the DFW area, it is a balmy 100 degrees with a heat index of 105. I start complaining about this time of year and keep complaining until it's November. I am okay about cold (don't love it but can deal with it) because you can always put on more clothes  I also do not need to hurt anyones eyes by taking off more clothes  Not a pretty site

To the OP, get in touch with some of our UL riders and see if they need help...My daughter worked for Sally Cousins one winter-worked her buns off, rode a zillion horses every day, had a BALL and was in Aiken for 3 months. I don't know what Sal's sitch is now, but certainly worth a call. http://sallycousins.com/
Also, check out Babette Lenna-She's young and a *FANTASTIC* instructor and is in Aiken for the winters.

I am for posting the stripping pics, come on girls.
Jup the leaves a turning yellow already, even the pines and i have started to get the firwood lined up.
I am preparing for the fire season, July, August and September. Its so dry that if a ant farts in the forest it will burn.
What do you feed ants against farting

Crazy coincidence?
I hadn't looked at this thread yet, but I looked up as I was driving out to the barn this afternoon and thought the light looked like Fall. I subconciously thought "Summer's coming to an end". ...um... no...it's only early July.... weird!
GNEP... agree on the fire danger thing! Don't want to go through that AGAIN! Maybe we need to get little teeny tiny doses of BEANO for those ants!

OP why don't you try to get in touch with some of the Canadian riders who summer here? Jessie Phoenix, Diana Burnett, Selena O'Hanlon, Kelly List...see who is headed south and maybe you could start with them now? No idea who is taking on WSs but worth a shot. Are you in Ontario?

Thanks for the good laugh!!!
Sorry not very helpful regarding what to feed ants against farting...
I, however, am looking forward to the winter!!! It's just GROWSE here in FL... humid, humid and hot... with a TON of rain... which translates to helicopter size mosquitoes!!!
Pretty sure that we can go scubba-diving in the parking lot at the barn at this point!!!
Would much rather pack on the layers than have to be close to naked and still sweating my butt off..
Hell the horses get soaked just sitting on the cross ties... you are barely done tacking up that you and your horse are drenched... GROWSE feeling!!!
To the OP: Good luck finding a place though.. if I hear of anything, I'll send a PM your way...
