View Full Version : Small pony tack?

We have never owned a small pony, ( none of us were ever small enough) but I have one coming in next week for my younger DD. I have a small schooling bridle, and I think her girth from her medium will work although I was thinking of switching all of our ponies to the fleece girths anyway. What I need is a really small martingale, if I purchase a "pony" size martingale will it go small enough for a small pony? I recently bought a new one for my older DD and her large and I seriously doubt it will go small enough for a small ( although I will admit I have not TRIED it). Pony is 12.2 hands and not overly wide( I do realize the wide part has nothing to do with martingales before someone flames me LOL).
If anyone has any good tips on where to buy pony tack let me know, oh and I need size XS bell boots too, we like the Davis bell boots in colors with the Velcro. SmartPak starts at a medium, these will be way too big! Also suggestions for a nice ( not overly expensive ) show bridle.
Thanks

www.justforponies.com If you don't see what you want on the website call them. They are very helpful and can recommend what will fit your small the best. They outfitted my 5yr old daughter's small pony with everything. :)

Beval used to make some of their styles in a "small pony" size. You should call them and see if they still do. I know I have a small pony bridle from them and I think the martingale is a small as well

I third www.justforponies.com they carry the Bobbie's brand of tack and it comes in small pony size. I have the small pony size martingale for my 12.1 hander. I like the darker brown option on their tack. I've bought both and the lighter one takes a lot of oil before it darkens up.

For a girth, you will probably need a 38". That seems to be right size for most smalls. The double-elastic ended, nylon and fleece ones are really commonly seen at even the big shows and are very inexpensive.

Bobbie's bridles in small pony size are very nice and come with 1/2" reins which are a god send for small hands.

I couldn't find bell boots or splint boots small enough for any of my smalls, so I just use polos. You could just cut down a pair of the smallest bell boots so they aren't too long if you really need them.

I'm Witchy from The Outside Course. Feel free to call me or email me if you need any help. I've been through all of this with my two little ones.

Yes, Beval still advertises some of their bridles as coming in "small pony" sizes.

Thanks we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Emily Elizabeth and I am trying to make sure I have what we need before next week when she arrives!! I have justforponies bookmarked so i will go back and dig around for a small pony martingale. Not sure is we will need bell boots yet or not so I will just hope we don't LOL! I have tons of polos so we are good in that area.I was surprised to see the fuzzy girths at Devon this year , and I live the idea of them ( no rubbing) so I plan to get 3 , one for our large, med and small LOL!
Thanks for all the help!!

our smalls all have to wear a 36" girth.
The 12.1 jumper pony wears the tiny little Davis bell boots and looks adorable in them!
I'm a big Beval fan but I ended up getting a Collegiate (much cheaper) for the pony and the "pony" size is a real pony size and fit my 12h mare well. justforponies.com is definitely an excellent site for the little guys.
I had to cut my polos way shorter so they weren't bulky around the tiny legs.

You've been given great advice-Justforponies ROCKS!! And their shipping is SO fast!!

I am positive I got a martingale from them for an 11 hand pony we used to lease so you will definitely find what you need. I got bell boots from them too for our small.

Ohh this website is awesome! We have a large farnley pony, and he is so petite in the legs. It's hard to find stuff to fit his petite little legs.

SkipChange - Your SMALLS wear 36" girths? Jeez, I apparently need to fatten my pony up! :P

I'll also recommend JustForPonies - also, if there is anyplace near you to keep an eye on second-hand listings... I see a lot of pony bridles on consignment and at tack swaps around here. I got an Edgewood cheap this way.

Since I know roughly where you live...:D Check with Steph at Crossroads Tack in Lebanon. She's got a lot of consignment stuff and can order just about anything that's not in stock. I remember seeing some nice pony bridles and I'm pretty sure she had martingales too.

yeah we use a 36" and have it buckled pretty high up, I thought it was big when someone said 38" for a small...what size does your pony wear?

Just For Ponies rocks, and they have an "everything pink" and "everything purple" page that has been supremely useful. :D

They really know their stuff, and are extremely helpful about helping you order the right size.

LOL that is where I got my schooling bridle for $9 and its nice a soft and in great shape!!! She does have very nice stuff, and she was sooo nice when I was there there with 4 kids under the age of 6 !!! We really took up a LOT of space in her shop that day!!! I need to head back there so I will make sure I check to see what she has used before I go on an ordering binge!!! I have been dropping things in my cart on Justforponies and I am up over $500 at the moment , of course I will be re- assessing after pony gets here and I am positive of what sizes I will need, but its so much fun to window shop!!!

Agree with everyone else, Justforponies is great. Daughter just got a small pony in and needed tack. Ordered a pony sized half pad for a small/small saddle. Received it extremely fast and it is so cute (cause of it's size LOL). Next is the martingale. I go right to that link now and find exactly what I need.

Perfect timing for this thread...
Our newest addition is 11.0 3/4 and the smallest girth I could find (36') is to big...
Thanks for the links..

The small I sold over winter circuit wore a 40" girth and he was round but not a fatty. My other little small also wears a 40" but it goes a little higher on the billets

Our small Welshie wears a 40 and he is a perfect weight-our vet checks him every time she is in the barn in case he needs to go on a diet!

Glad Just For Ponies is getting so much praise-they deserve it!!
