I dewormed all my guys on the first with Quest Plus gel. i wanted to use Taper Care but it was sold out at the farm supplies in my area, and on line as well.
Now they are all rubbing their butts like CRAZY! They are dewormed on rotation every 8 weeks w/o fail and were not rubbing prior to wormer. Fecal was neg for pin worms.
Ideas? Thoughts? Experiences?
You could do a 1.5x dose of Anthelcide and see if that resolves your issue.
Deworming on an 8 week schedule doesn't guarantee a thing. What chemicals have you been using?

As I said this AM's fecal was clean - so worming with yet another wormer would be pointless. We have regular fecals done and worm every 8 weeks specific to their needs. That has proved optimal for my horses thus far.
I just want to know if any one else has had a similar experience with this product. If it is irritating to pass and perhaps that is what my guys are experiencing.
According to this The Horse article (http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=1621)
Pinworm eggs are rarely observed during fecal examination because the females lay their eggs on the skin around a horse's anus, rather than mixed in with the manure like other parasitic nematodes
You cannot rely on fecals to tell you the pinworm load.

Interesting!
Are pinworms usually the culprit with tail rubbing, or can it be other types as well, or do they know?

Don't put much faith in fecals.
Are you sure you took a homogeneous sample? Pick up the whole pile of crap and then vortex the boogers out of it before dipping your spoon?

Hi here is a link to another forum....some one else is asking the same question. Maybe something in the product has changed?

My horses are negative for parasites - I have faith in the fecal tests and those providing them. Fecal examination has a well documented history of accuracy.
In speaking with the University Veterinary hospital today they said "Moxidectin as found in Quest & Quest Plus gels have been shown to be irritating to the tissues in the rectum during elimination. The irritation can cause significant tail head rubbing for 3 - 5 days post usage. This is often confused with indication that pin worms are present. A FECAL exam that presents negative should be the primary indicator that your horse is not infested with worms but instead is experiencing irritation to the Moxidectin. The irritation is not an indicator that this product is in any way harmful to your horses".
So I have my answer. Thank you - the rubbing stopped yesterday in all of my horses - which was within the 3 - 5 day period.
