View Full Version : Ration Balancers: Progressive v. Buckeye v. Triple Crown 30%

I've been feeding Progressive ProAdvantage Grass Balancer for a number of years now, and am very happy with the results. Unfortunately, the feed store where I've bought it has decided to stop carrying it. I can still get it, but I would have an approximately 3 hour round-trip drive to the feed store, and that just seems like a lot.
Both Buckeye and Triple Crown ration balancers are available much closer. I've looked at the feed tags, and they both seem similar to Progressive. I'd appreciate any input as to significant differences between all three feeds. I'm leaning toward feeding the Buckeye, but just because there are more places near here that carry it.
Thanks for any help!

I've got a spreadsheet back home with both of those laid out... if you'd like me to email it to you, just send me a PM. I've used Progressive in recent past and loved it. Just switched to Triple Crown Lite and it's working well... though it seems I will need to add in a multi-vite. Anyways, let me know if you'd like that spreadsheet.
ETA: Thought about trying the TC 30%, but the local feed stores don't carry it... plus it's slightly higher in NSC then the Lite. However, if I could find the 30% I would consider switching (stopped using the PN Grass because the dealer is too far away once I moved horses).

I did a spreadsheet too... though I can't find it. But the TC 30% is almost identical to Progressive.

That's what I was going to say, but the TC 30% is lower in NSC then the Progressive (something like 9.8% compared to PN's 13%). Everything else was nearly identical though, if I recall correctly.

The Buckeye and Progressive are a bit more similar to each other than either is to the TC 30%. I read somewhere that one of the main people who developed the Progressive came over from Buckeye, hence the similarity. How much truth there is to this, I don't know.
All of them are excellent products, and you really can't go wrong. The TC is a bit lower in calories, but a bit higher in NSCs... take that into consideration, along with price for each product, to make your decision.
I use the TC 30% because it was the most cost-effective option for me.
(I also have spreadsheets, but mine are pretty similar to appychik's, so I'll not be redundant and offer up mine).

TC is actually lower in NSC's than Progressive. Like someone previously mentioned, it is 9.8% for the 30% supplement, whereas Progressive's is in the low teens.
And the guy that started Progressive did leave Buckeye.
I've used both Progressive's Grass Balancer and TC's 30%. My horses tend to like the taste better with the Progressive than with TC, or really it's just one in particular that does and of course, it's the one that needs it the most so I've been using Progressive. I'm considering going back to TC though since it is closer and with my employee discount, it makes more sense.

I have some horses on the Progressive. They eat it ok -- I've tasted it and it tastes awful.
I use ABC's Fortified with some of my other horses. These horses have shinier coats than any of the other horses in the barn -- they always are noted for their dapples and shiny coats.
I like the ABC's products overall -- pricewise, they are about the same as Progressive and ingredients are similar except for selenium.
Anyone else use ABC?

also keep in mind that TC 30% (as well as all the TC feeds) have guaranteed levels of organic trace minerals (not guaranteed on the other brands)..we have a guaranteed biotin level and as mentioned, the NSC level is very low in the TC 30% at 9.8% NSC.
