I've had a Herm Sprenger aurigan bit for about 3 years. Whenever its gotten dirty I've soaked it in warm water and wiped it off, but today I realized just how discolored it has become. When I bought it it was a nice brassy color but now it is a dark brown-green. I started to scrub it with a brillo pad, and that seemed to do the trick, but then I started wondering if maybe the discoloration is natural and by scrubbing it I would interfere with the tasted of the metal (which is why I bought it in the first place). Does any one have any experience with this?

Use HS Diamond paste, read the instructions on the bottle, and your bit will come up looking as good as new :)
You don't need to scrub it, and the discolouration IS natural when you are using it and not "cleaning" it properly, but you can clean it and make it look brand new and it doesn't make a difference on the effectiveness of the bit.

Try a little bit of vinegar in the water :) It's just oxidation. Don't soak it too long!

I clean mine with Nevr Dull wadding paste, then rinse it thoroughly in water. The horse has never shown any signs of being upset about the taste.
