Has anyone experienced their horse not wanting to eat hay when on Doxy?
My horse is eating his grain and doxy but not his hay. He usually cleans it up!

I'm on Doxy for Lyme disease, and I can tell you that it really can upset your stomach. But if he is eating his grain, I would look elsewhere for the problem. Are his teeth OK? Have you changed your hay. Maybe try hay from a different supplier.

When my boy was on Doxy for Lyme my vet told me to also give him a probiotic at the same time, because it can upset their stomach.

Probios (sp?) (I think) is that name of the one I gave him.

Any antibiotic can cause stomach upset, have you tried wetting the hay?:D

In general, I think that horses are supposed to tolerate doxy better than humans.

Doesn't mean that your horse isn't the exception however. But the fact that the horse is cleaning up the grain suggests that it may not be a stomach-ache.

Have you gotten in a new load of hay recently? Or are you now feeding from some older, drier or more stemmy hay that's been stored for a while? It might have to do with the palatability of the hay, particularly if the horse has access to fresh pasture.

Adding a probiotic wouldn't be a bad idea though.

Good luck.

I remember reading on here, that you should give the probiotic a few hours before giving the doxy. If you give the probiotic with the doxy, basically the doxy destroys it.

I did not have problems with my horses not eating their hay. However, it did seem they were not the voracious eaters they usually are.
