View Full Version : USEF # for the HORSE?

Is this (and why is this) separate from the rider's USEF#? I've noticed that there is a space for it on the USEA entry form (ergo, it must be "required" by the event organizer), but I couldn't find anything about it--or where to find it--on the USEF site (and the event organizer was confused about where to find it too! ;))
I don't remember it being required by any of the 4 HTs I've entered so far this year...

Yes horses have there own USEA #. Go to USEA website and you can apply for one there. I think it is like $25. You my not need one until novice or that could be for the rider.
I alway get one on the horse I'm competing just so they have a record!

Dr. D - its not required at Prelim, but the majority of horses at prelim have one (year end awards, record etc) so that may be why you were asked for one.

You need a USEF number for her for prelim! I don't know why no one has caught it, but it is a must have. You can get a free number (can't remember what it is called), which counts but is not the same as the one you pay for (don't remember the difference. Probably something to do with USEF year end stuff).

Pretty sure it is required at prelim, but now I'm second guessing myself.

Yeah.....and I do the jumpers as well as eventing and found out that this year you also need a USHJA # for the HORSE as well as the USEF # for the horse to do the jumpers...it's the same # as your USEF horse #, but a different fee!

Which is why when I thought about going to Upperville to do a few rounds I changed my mind! Too much hassle!

Directly from USEA rep's mouth when I recently inquired about a horse moving up to Prelim: recent rule change states that Prelim horses do NOT need a USEF # (they did in the past, but no longer do). Starting at Prelim the RIDER does need a USEF # (or pay a non-member fee with entries).
Here is a guide through Prelim:
BN: No Horse/Rider Memberships/Registrations needed (USEA non-member fee applies to Rider)
N: Both Horse and Rider need USEA #s (Horse can have limited status through Training for less $);
No USEF needed for horse or rider
T: Same as Novice
Prelim: Same as N/T plus Horse must now have upgraded USEA registration (more $);
Rider must have USEF membership (or pay a non USEF member fee); no Horse USEF # needed

Thanks for the clarification, Seven Dogs :)
My next step was going to be calling USEA, so you saved me the trouble! (I upgraded her last year before she did her first P; I've been a member of USEF for years, though I usually don't "re-up" until right before the first HT of the year...Now I can e-mail the organizer of the MDHT and let her know that my entry is indeed "complete" :))

You were just remembering the "old" rule, apparently! ;)

You're welcome! It's sometimes hard to keep up with all the rule changes. :)

It has been a few years since I've needed to concern myself with it!

Here is the most useful chart for these sort of questions
http://www.useventing.com/resources/files/docs/membership_horse_registration_requirements.pdf
If you want to do an FEI competition or have points count for year end, you will need a USEF life recording number for your horse. May be it is just me but they seem to go up in price each year so.....

I believe USEA lobbied on behalf of the membership to make the USEF horse registration optional. Given the cost, their efforts are very much appreciated. :yes:

Where did you find that chart? I find both the USEA and USEF sites more than a little frustrating to navigate. I spent a quite awhile looking at both earlier trying to figure out if you did or didn't actually need the number.

How much is the membership? (She asks, mulling over whether or not getting her horse a membership would be worthwhile...I'm not planning on doing any FEI events, but this is my last year of "real competition"...)
And yes, I agree Seven Dogs; thank you, USEA!

It's on the USEA web site. I think someone must have told me about it. Once you know it exists...it isn't too hard to find. Look under competitions, drop down to forms and you will see it listed.
This is another one that was very useful when you are getting ready for a CCI (you find it in the same list of documents)

When you have to get a passport for your horse (just needed for the FEI competitions). I'd just go ahead and call the USEF....you have to look a bit but if want "contact us" and then scroll down and there are people that specialize is assisting with passports and horse recording. They were very nice and helpful for me.

not worth it if you are not doing any FEI events....it is $200 for Life
recording or $75 for the year.
This is the form http://www.usef.org/documents/membership/2009HorseApplication.pdf
Now this is something I didn't know...it is CHEAP to register a foal...$35 for a life recording. So you bet when my mare's foal hits the ground...I'll get him/her a number;)

Thanks, bfne: definitely helpful info, on all levels!
And yes, I do plan to breed Her Majesty at some point in the future, so this is good to know ;)
